If anyone out there in the Chicago area wants this stuff we can pool an order together and I can bring it back on a trip from Ohio. Can anyone out there confirm SD sand at any Cleveland area HD?
If in the Chicagoland area (or along the trail from Chicago to Cleveland to Athens,Oh and from Athens through Columbus, Dayton, Indy to Chicago) and you want to pool an order I am willing to do it for cost plus my travel/shipping expense. I am making this trip twice in July, only willing to do the sand once though. I'll entertain serious inquires and will require a deposit closer to the trip time (ask around I'm good for it). So, start asking around the Clevelan HDs and let's get this thing rolling.
BTW, guess who got the last of Premiums SD back in April?
G, where was that Yardright from? Let me know, we can work this out.
Talk to ya later, Bill.

It is a conspiracy against you swreefer - I have called the manufacturer in Florida (listed above) - Southdown in PA and all the Home Depot Stores and instructed them to keep it from you. My goal in life is to deprive you of Southdown.....

Kidding of course - Someone else compiled the list - Not I. Just because it is there on this list does not mean they will have it - just that someone has gotten it from there before.

I was at the Home Depot store on the west side of 695 on Rte. 40 (Baltimore National Pike) this week and they had 2 pallets of the stuff - of course it was in an employee only section and nobobdy knew about it......So it took almost an hour to find it. See receipt above for address.

It states that the YardRight bag is the samething as SD sand, but then there was some
controvery about whether it is the same stuff and SD.

So, my question is: what is the conclusion?

Is this the same thing? Would it be ok to buy some of this stuff? Where is it sold?

Whirley</STRONG><HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

I ordered SD sand online and that's what I got. They were 40# bags. The small print on the bag indicated that it was manufactured and distributed by Southdown, Inc., so I concluded that it was the same stuff. I ordered mine from reefland.com.

BILL!!! I WANT THAT LAST BAG !!
icon_razz.gif

yznhmr and I could go for 10 bags,
if your going to make the trip.

I guess the first thing we have to do is
figure out where in OH we can get the sand.

yznhmr called yesterday, and said that they only place he could find SD sand was in New Jersey.

Bill, if you are driving back and forth, it would be great if you could bring some bags back with you. Can we pay you in Xenia frags?

The discussion on another board turned to whether the Yardright was the same stuff. The conclusion was apparently so - HOWEVER - there is some Yardright Multipurpose Playsand. That is not what you want.....you want the carribean SELECT playsand.

I have not seen the Yardright live and in-person yet. I am not positive where to get that.

Wish I could be of more help -

I just have to laugh every time I see one of these threads. People, get a grip. Go to the store and buy some fine grain silica sand. It does the same job. It won't cause algae blooms. The buffering effect from aragonite is minimal, at best. Certainly not enough to eliminate the need for additives. Best of all, EVERYONE can get silica sand in their area. And it's cheap. If Southdown is available in your area, great, buy it. If not, don't waste your money having this stuff shipped all over the country. OK, flame away, but the experts agree with me. As do many others, who like myself have been using silica sand for years with no problems.

Read my reply again:

I have used silica sand for years, works just fine. So have many of the other old timers. I never said SD wasn't a viable option. Quite the opposite. I just don't see the need to go to the lengths (and cost)that some others do to get it. And as for the color, you can get silica sand that is as white as white gets.

I guess from my point of view is that if I'm going to start fresh and new, I want to get it done right the first time.

If I have a 120 gallon tank, and I want a 4" DSB, I'd rather find the stuff that I know
is good, versus taking a risk, and using silica sand, and end up dumping the whole tank in 1 year from now.

Anyone know the phone numbers to any HD that has SD from Chicago to Cleveland, OH or Altanta GA?

Thier online store is useless.

As for the silica sand debate (?) as far as I'm concerned the jury is in on the SD, everyone who uses it likes it. I've always sided with actual usage in reefs rather than professional testimony, not saying they're wrong, but if it works-it works. BTW, I haven't seen any reef growing off the shore of Lake Michigan. More importantly, the crisp white of this sand makes it much more desirable IMO.
So, it works and looks great and oh, yeah, with shipping cost is still 1/4 the price of CaribSea. Done Deal!

Again, any reefers along the route in my above post interested, shoot me an email and we can work out the particulars. I'll be making the trip the week of July 15 or 29. We still need to pinpoint a location.
G, the GOLD sounds better to me. No really, cost plus gas is enough for me, well maybe some decent frags. Thanks, Bill.

I went to Toledo last week, the HD there did not have the SD sand, they had some from Michigan which was a silica sand.

Anyone know about the stores around Cleveland? Pittsburgh?

Can't really go any farther than that or it's too costly, in miles and time.

Thanks, Bill.

Ah, man, now all of you folks are starting to make me feel: guilty, like a glommer, hoarder, and a hog. I, about 9 months ago, drove 5 mi. and picked up 800#s of SD for my 180, 33 fuge and 100 sump;I obviously have some left over. $3.74 for 50# bag...Oh, I feel so guilty. If anyone is in the "Dtown" area and wants some let me know. "Once in a while 'ya just get lucky!" Ed
P.S. When installed it doesn't look like "2%Skim", it's more like whole milk....
