I picked up 10 50lb. bags of Southdown today at Home Depot in Patchogue NY(Long Island). They still had half of a skid left. It was $3.84 per bag. That's 500 lbs. for under $40!Thanks Grumpy Vet for giving us that list of locations back in June.

Okay...I didn't even know what Southdown was until today when I started reading about it here. I was gonna buy some live sand but this sounds much cheaper. So, I went to home depot here in Mt Laurel, NJ and picked myself up a 50 lb bag of it. $3.84 and that's it. There wasn't a crowd congregated around the pallets of it. Nobody raced me to pick up the last bag. I didn't have to sell my 1st born, I don't know anyone in the mafia. I have no political connections. I just walked up, picked up the bag, and checked out. So anticlimatic after all the hype I read here. BTW, now that I've got it, do I have to treat it at all or can I just add it to the tank straight away? As an aside, I hope this doesn't pain anyone outside of the NE, but it's kind of funny. When I was getting the bag out of the car to bring inside, it snagged on the doorway and ended up spilling about 1/3 of it in the driveway. Bummer.

llowwellll-

Us reefers get so hammered by the prices we have to pay for this hobby, that a deal like SD drives everybody crazy.

I bought a couple of bags at my local Home Depot. I was surprised to read Grumpy Vet's statement about it being manufactured/processed in NJ.

If you do not have critters in your tank, just add the sand. If you have critters, you may want to move them for the couple of days it will take for the sand to settle.

All of the Home Depots in West Nassau County,LI,NY are constantly filled with SD sand. I added mine with the critters in there and have had no problems. I did it over a months time. About 80lbs of SD. I called it HURRICANE DAN.

I am not sure how to define the color of the water as 2% or whole milky (being "lactose intolerant") but the foam on top sure looked like the head on a Ginnus!!!

I'm gonna have to go with what "llowwelll" said. I got laid off a month ago and have been spending extra time with my briney friends so I decided today might be a nice day to run out to HD and pick up a bag of this SD sand I had heard about. Walked in picked up a bag (hardest part was deciding which pallet to take it from) paid for it and went home. I too am now enjoying a Guiness.

Since I do have an abundance of time on my hands at the moment, I would be willing to deliver somewhere where it woudld be worth the while ( 2 skids or better I would say). If a LFS wants to pay cost of a Ryder Truck , gas, and sand, I could make the trip anytime in the near future. I live in Philly and am feeling a little restless. Let me know if anyone is interested...

You did a search on this board using "Southdown" right? ;)

I think you will find your answer. Unfortunately, I think Southdown has stopped shipping the sand you need.

it makes a mess and blows all over. Using SD with a great amount of water movement is very tricky with out causing a sand storm. Moving a piece of rock causes a sandstorm at times. Personally, i'll never touch it again.
