I've met about the same number of men and women in the saltwater hobby. I even went to a woman's house who was having ich problems. She had a respectable 55 gal FO with razor caulerpa and a couple of feather dusters and a few fish. The old man was outside repainting a pickup truck 8) .

Or maybe the women don't have an obsessive need to constantly talk about their tanks. I would say the "shop talk" centers more around males but that doesn't mean the hobby does.

Yea...good one  . I'm just kidding women :P . Guys have to gossip too so that's what the reef board is for.

First, Define Women.

Does pee sitting down generally categorized as women? If yes, what if the person pee sitting down has a weini?

(look how fast this thread degrades..............)

Aren't you the one your wife trained to pee sitting down?

I guess there's something about having 500 lbs of quivering muscle between your legs under a saddle...

you mean they have saddles for them, too? cool!

hubby would never get into this hobby on his own. he looks at all the things involved and says, "no way. too complicated. i don't understand all that stuff." but he loves my tank and is just as proud to show it off to people as i am.

he does take part in the processes involved... i 'use' him when i need to mount things. :D

When I first started posting I chose the name Sea Serpent so that nobody would know that I was a "girl". I was never taken seriously in school when I wanted to do carpentry, chemistry, and math. Even now when I tell people that I keep fish, they say "Isn't that nice" until they see the equipment and the gadgets. When I start to explain about the chemical reactions, how the calcium reactor works, what a refugium is, and the plumbing is set up and the extra electical line I put in . . . their eyes start to glaze over.

My husband will only help me if I get into trouble - like if I can't get the fitting on the CO2 canister tight enough. Otherwise, I do all my own plumbing and electrical work. And I am proud to be able to do it myself.

In the Boston Reefers Society, there are about 10 women and 100 men. The men treat us with respect because they know we know what we are talking about!!!

Let's go ladies!

I believe it is a 50/50 realationship but there is a majority of males on the net because of the way the "gossip" happens. Women prefer to gab on the phone and or socialy because that is a easier way to fully interact with others. Ex. "How are you?, I'm OK my ......" " You sound tired, not getting enough......" "You look like you need a .........."
Men prefer the internet type forum because it is easier for us to just express ourselves with one or two sentences which are more or les just statements. Ex. "Me hungry" wait for a response "Lets Eat" "Ugh"

You all might be right about the idea of men doing more posting on the net ... Maybe like the video-game thing . . . It's almost all guys doing the saga-type electonic stuff . . .
Me, I get bored at work and like to read the posts .. . I don't post as often but learn alot from reading others' posts.

hi.
This board is more reef related than seahorse and other fishes. But I guess quite a few of people here have FO tank.

As I mentioned in an earlier thread, this board alone is not the best way to sample the reefer population because some avid reefer never visit this. Some reefer never visit his/her (I hate doing this...) LFS because he/she (I hate doing this...) can get everything by mail order. There is another group of reefer who actually don't have a reef tank running, but still in this board and RAMR helping/confusing others out. There are many other gourps.

Again, the stereotype of a reefer is a White male, with bolding head, married, and into other hobbies like flying plane (real airplane, not RC), and like to tug he shirt into his underwear. 80% of people in this board fits the description perfectly

Well, I thought this subkect would attract some interesting thoughts...

I hope I didn't offend any of the women in the hobby, I am glad to have a GF who completely enjoys my reef, but when we begin talking about the technical equipment and such she is less interested, though she has helped me do a water change -- not such a small job!!

I just had noticed that on the board (I agree this is a sub-sample of the population, therefore has what statistitians (sp?) call "sample error") there were less women, but also it seems a bit in our local (albeit Lubbock, TX -- more "sample error") reef tank group...

Anyway, appreciate everyone's input!!

P.S. and some shocking tangents! 8O (just wanted to used this smiley!)

Sorry, ladies, but I think there's more men in reefkeeping than women. On the board and people I meet locally, and when I go to the wholesaler or LFS it's mostly guys. Something I noticed too is that, at least in California, it seems like a lot of Asian Americans are involved in the hobby. Just my 2 cents.

That's because Asian American comprised a much higher percentage of the total population in California then any other states.

This thread is hilarious!! First off I'm a setter not a pointer. I also think at least around here there are way more guys then gals. I've never been to the LFS where the gals are oooing and awhing around the shipment that just came in! (except for this old lady)
It does really surprise me, as I do compare it alot with gardening?? Thats how I explain it to my family and friends...it's like having a water garden. And I always thought more women were into gardening then men? Also I would have thought that the guys would be more into the preditory tanks and the women into the reefs and angels...I thought wrong.
Maybe women (under 40) just don't have the time?? with working, keeping the house, their children, the big child, oops I meant spouse?? I know that 25 years ago I sure wouldn't have had the time.
I was raised with all boys...maybe that's why I've always loved "guy things" not only tanks but fast cars, sled's etc.??

hi.
Again, I feel that reef is more close to hydroponics than gardening. Planted freshwater tank is closer to gardening than hydroponics, but not reef.

It also seems to me that there is higher ratio of Asian in the hobby than White, but much lower ratio of Black and Hispanic than White. I been in the New England, the MidWest and Southern California for many years, but I never really conduct any formal survey, just causal observations.

Sorry for getting into race. I usually keep my discussion around sex
