I was just kind of curious about how many people posting here are Women/Men because it seems that there are a lot more guys try to convince their wives this is worthwhile instead of the reverse... just curious...

If this is a Male-Majority hobby, why?? Is it because of all the technical-junk;

- GPH on your PHs?
- Flowthrought your CR, effluent pH?
- Fuge pressure/flow?
- total Gal of SW in your system?
- Amount of lighting Wattage required for your SPS/LPS/Softies?

I just wonder, because in my opinion, the closest analogy I can think to Reefing and growing corals is probably Gardening;
- We want it aesthetically pleasing
- We are overly concerned with "the perfect enviroment" lighting/flow/pH
- We spend hours pruning/fragging/repositioning to give our little guys just a bit more optimum light
- We add fertilizer/trace elements
- We top-off/water the plants
- Mow the lawn/pull algae out

I just see ENDLESS COMPARISONS to gardening!!!

We do have quite a few ladies posting here, but I guess we guys are the majority. (Although we can't really tell who the girls and boys are, can we?)

It may have something to do with the hobby being so gadget-intensive.

I agree, gadget-intensive, especially when you have ORP, pH, temp probes which can give you (quite overkill) second-by-second reports on water quality!!

But this poses a more philosphical question of "why to guys (and not girls) like technical-type hobbies (or even gadgets for that matter)?"

hi.
There will be even more similarity between hydroponics and this hobby. And when was the last time you heard a lady get arrested for growing weed hydroponically?

You can tell rather a tank is taken care off by a man or woman. (More stereotyping follows).
1, if the tank is neat and pretty, mostly fishes, and everything run by two outlets, then it is a lady's tank
2, if the tank is messy, but with every type of reactors, pumps you can imagine, even a controller with 5 different type of probes, then is is a guy's tank.

In the planted and freshwater community, there is larger portion of lady than this community, IMO.

Perhaps women are not well represented on reef bulliten boards in particular.

I know that my mom and sister keep salt, my Dad too, and none of them ever post. My mom is a member on RC but hardly ever posts.

Also, there are about 50/50 men to women in the reef club out here I think, I've never counted, it just seems that way.

The only reason I post so much is I am stuck at a desk all day, and it is entertaining.

Nice suit 7.

I think it's more of a male hobby because men need things that need to be tinkered with. If we're not tinkering with this, then were tinkering with that. Then we tinker some more.

I think I'll go f with something!

Some of the nicest sps dominated tanks I know of belong to females, mine included. And yes, I would have to agree that it's very much like gardening. I'm surprised so many men are in it :)

As far as technology and gadgets, I like the tank & computers, my husband does the more hands on things like house repairs and doesn't know the first thing about my tank and barely about the computer. And I LOVE Gadgets!

I guess what I'm getting at is that you probably shouldn't stereotype.

hahaha 2 outlets??? is that even possible?? Most "guy" tanks seem to be a fire hazard and a half. I guess we figure that if a fire ever breaks out, at least theres water near by to take care of it :>

First, Define Women.

Does pee sitting down generally categorized as women? If yes, what if the person pee sitting down has a weini?

(look how fast this thread degrades..............)

I'm a girl, and I think its true that we tend to be pretty anal about this hobby. I have to have everything looking perfect and everything in its place or it bugs me. Most of my friends (inluding the guys) think I'm insane when it comes to my fish. They just don't understand...

Yes, women definitely like horses.

I guess there's something about having 500 lbs of quivering muscle between your legs under a saddle...

At least that's what I always thought.

Oh, you mean SEAhorses! I gotcha.

Yes, the seahorse hobby is DEFINITELY dominated by women and "artistic" men (Danm excluded).

Cheers
