I've been away from my tank pretty often, I was thinking of setting up some web cams to help keep an eye on things and to check in when I miss seeing it ( like all the time). I was thinking of putting a camera in the sump area to look at the skimmer and water level. I'm wondering how long a camera might last in the sump area though. I wanted to use one or two cameras to look inside the tank. any suggestions on camera's and thoughts on the application? thanks.

J, i have thought the same thing. I would just leave the stand doors open with the cam looking in. Then if i see something like the skimmer going nuts, i can turn it off with my aquacontroller. If you are putting it inside the stand, why not get something made for outdoors?

well, there are still people home so I can't keep the doors open.
it's more for me to look at the skimmer and remind people if it needs to be cleaned ;)
Sharn those are decent camera's but I do need something that can attach to a router directly.

i mount a cam next to my tank. u just need a pc with a constant internet connection n use some type of software like simplecam n configure a port for it. u will also need some remote access to connect n manually turn on or off the cam.

I don't think putting a video camera near a tank is a good idea. After all the fish need to spend some intimate time alone!!!:goldfish2

There are plenty of wireless outdoor network cams available. Since you have a wireless router the setup will take a few minutes at most. If you have a static IP its super easy to log on. Otherwise you can use on of the many mnaged DNS service providers. Panasonic has wireless cams available and they provide free managed DNS services. All that will cost you around 200~300 bucks. Well worth it!!!

i have a security service in my house that i implemented when i had a Nanni in my house taking care of my kids. i made this aware to them so they would know that we are on top of our kids. I felt bad doing this but i had no choice, the nanny was not someone i knew but was highly recommended, anyway i could log on and see every part of my house except my bathrooms. so i put a camera on my tank so I'm able to see the tank. but i did not put one in the cabinet. these cameras look awesome.

you could watch my tank all day, and not get one for yourself :scratchch I see where your going with this :lol2:
I did think of the under water box for the camera, it might work if it had a top that was sealed and sat just at the surface, might block too much light though. maybe a camera right against the glass would be easier.
