I may be mistaken here...

but isnt fugu (dunno the proper speeling <- mistake on purpose) a delicacy in Japanese cuisine? and isnt fugu japanese name for puffer fish?

I'd hazard a guess that being pinched is a lot nicer then getting chopped up and served for $300 a plate...

esmithiii, frying fish for food and pinching a puffer are two completely different things. I THOUGHT the point of keeping a reef was to allow inhabitants to thrive in a new home, but rather, seems your definition of reefkeeping is a torture chamber :?

Dragoon and Save_the_Expos, thanks for seeing where I'm coming from... at least some people around this place still know the meaning of the word ethics... it's a shame that there are people who have a fettish over watching a puffer puff, that's pathetic...

you other guys act like you're 12 years old and it's the COOLEST thing in the world to put a puffer through unneeded stress just so you can get off to watching it grow. I bet you guys are used to getting turned on by watching stuff grow tho

I know you aren't killing it or whatever, I just think it's really twisted and fuqed up, but ya know what... your tank, I have no control over it. Just wanted to make it clear that I'm in this hobby to get enjoyment out while trying my hardest to ensure my animals are their happiest. You guys are getting enjoyment out of making a pet think it's gonna die

btw, you can sugarcoat the issue a thousand different ways, but the bottom line is purposely making a living animal think it's going to die for your own personal enjoyment is torture... no matter how you cut it. Sure it has a brain the size of a pencil eraser, but does that make it ethically correct? I think not. Sick people like yourself need to really grow up and get out more... theres bigger and better things to do in this world than getting a rise out of watching a pet suffer

Jandree- you have missed the point entirely. Have you read the whole thread?

the bottom line is purposely making a living animal think it's going to die for your own personal enjoyment is torture

Bottom line is this: fish don't think. Even if they did think you are just as bad as the guy who pinches the fish! If a fish thinks, then what do you think it "thinks" when you catch it in a net and remove it from the water? What do you think it "thought" when it was taken from its natural home when it was collected? All for your pleasure! You are the epitome of a hypocrite. What about all the fish that died during collection, transport and in the LFS where you bought your fish just so you could have some pretty fish in your tank?!? What about the fact that you keep pretty fish in a little box for your own enjoyment? Isn't that torture?

FWIW I don't own a puffer, nor have I ever pinched someone elses puffer (in both senses of the phrase ;) ) but no one in this hobby has room to criticize.

I do see where you're coming from. The only thing I'm saying is once they're established in the aquarium, I don't find the need to cause them extra stress than they've already encountered, that's all.

Honestly, this is a stupid thing to argue over, so I'm throwin in the towel for this thread. I think everyone that posted something in this thread had at least one good point, and we could keep arguing for the next week. I'm just gonna forgive, forget, and move on... bye everyone

WOW... 8O, what a response. I just wanted to see it puff up, that's all. I didn't know there was a science behind it. I didn't know about half of all what is posted. Now I do. (not to mention I didn't understand about 80 percent of those words)
I haven't made it puff up yet, and now I don't know if I will now. I don't wanna hurt the little guy, I just wanted to experience what would happen. I never seen it happen before except on Finding Nemo. I bought the puffer cuz I thought it was a beautiful fish. I didn't buy it with the intentions of hurting it! I mean the first question I get asked when people ask me what's in my tank and I tell them a puffer, is "Cool, have you seen it puff up?" I mean it was just the curiosity in me. I mean sorry for those of you who almost had a heart attack. I didn't know I was gonna get such a ruckis (is that how you spell that?... i love it too) I've only been the in this hobby for about 4 months now, and I'm just tyrin' to learn eveything thing I can about this hobby and the fish because I absoulty love it! And a lot of you are so Damn Smart and that's why I'm here. So anywho, from what I understand, making him puff isn't the worst thing, but it's not the best. I would like to see it puff up, (maybe by pinching the skin a little..... ) but what it sounds like is that they do it on there own pretty often. So maybe I'll leave him be for a while, that should help some of you sleep at night now...
Well I can't beleive the response I got out of a simple question. Apparently it wasn't so simply after all. Any other replys are WAY welcome!! Thanks!

I have never seen my puffer puff once. Nor do I necessarily want to. He's a pretty interesting fish any rate. If I want to see a puffer puffing, I just go down to my local seafood cafe where they have a big one stuffed and hanging from the ceiling like a mirror ball.

I read about someone who had been bitten by their puffer. The person that was being bitten yanked their hand from the tank, the puffer held on long enough to be flung across the room. It puffed up and rolled around the floor for a while before it was carefully returned to the tank.

So you could try that. HTH

It's nice to see the task force getting along so well:D

Yeah this thread totally went to hell. The only reason I said anything in the first place was to counter those that were a little too quick to jump to moral outrage.

Jandree22, do you know what the Strawman Logical Fallacy is? It's when you take someone's point of view and distort that into the most extreme version as you can, thereby demonizing the person across the table and making them appear excessive and outrageous. I think you are guilty of that when you rephrase "gently pinch" into "torture" ...

Again, I don't think people should run out and mess with their pets of any kind on a regular basis to elicit a stress/defensive response, but as others have said, it's a part of nature and if you've never seenT it then it's probably an educational experience to see once.

No need to be rude about it, it was a civil discussion and whatnot, or so I thought.

now, I like to watch my fish eat (usually the only time I get to see them all out at once) but when I feed them its a mad rush to see which fish can eat the most. I am sure this causes stress on the fish (being chased off by other fish and such). But does this action make me a bad person, or a bad reefer, I do not think so.

How my words above have anything to do with this thread is unknown..lol but after reading every word posted, the words above where the first to make it to the keyboard.

On another note, I had a puffer that loved to suck face with the intake of my closed loop. I do not know if it was mental of physical, but if appeared as though the puffer was having fun :)
