Saturday morning update :

The anemone looks stressed, but okay...the clownfish are alive. Other 'non-completely-dead' pieces I'm bringing to the shop to keep are : 10" purple/green frogspawn, baby blue ricordia florida, green torch, yellow torch, blue & green center blastomussa, metallic green star polyps, green trumpet button polyps, metallic green hammer coral, and a green anchor coral.

All SPS are dead (three acros and a scroll), the colt is nearly gone, so I'm guessing that was the culprit. Purple capnella, metallic green scolymia, all 5 different xenias, the other 4 frogspawns, metallic platygyra, green fungia, flame mushrooms, orange ricordia florida, green striped mushrooms, and I'm sure I'm forgetting a bunch...

There's a 125 coral tank that my customers have dubbed the 'miracle tank' since anything dying or stressed recovers quickly in it, and any corals in it thrive like crazy. Also, it's the only tank my clowns have spawned in (when I kept stuff there during a move)...hopefully it will live up to its name this time.

Peace,

Chip

To see my tank white out and dead is the absolute worst feeling I have ever experience. Good luck. You will recover, just like I did.
Minh

You know, Minh, I thought of you as I was struggling with that sight of my tank...I remember when yours went down, and how crushed you were.

It will take time, but if some things survive at the shop, then I'll be able to rebuild...

Thanks for the thoughts, everyone.

Peace,

Chip

Marillion....I'm just curious....did you have a good, effective protein skimmer working on the tank? I believe, but I'm not certain, that if you had this disaster wouldn't have occurred. I feel really bad for your loss...I get bummed when one of my corals isn't acting like it ought to.

I'd say a Precision Marine Bullet-1 is a 'good, effective protein skimmer.' :)

The colt was just too big for it...it was probably full the first night after the colt dissolved, and it was 2 days from then until I looked at the tank again.

Chip

Sorry for the loss. Pet death pretty much sucks. I've got a dog that's been with me 10 years who is falling apart physically. He's not the kind to die in his sleep - he's going to make me make the call. Bummin.

As for the gf. I don't know how old you are friend, or how many girlfriends you've had, but please review my first and second rules of dating, below . . .

1) All chicks have snakes in their heads, that's a given - the interesting question is how many and how poisoness.

2) EVERY chick can hide anything about herself for a month, if the snakes are hissing loud enough. For example, she may hate fish. Then before you know it, not enough room, too much money, the smell, the mess, and you have 3 kids, a minivan, a golden retriever who pisses on your carpet, and a thirty year mortgage to make sure you can't escape. Welcome to Americana, please make your selection, followed by the pound sign, now.

If you're going to move in, brother, for the love of God do not set up a tank bigger than 5 gallons for at least a year, and only then if your snake count is below about 50!

Moving in in one month? Yikes! I can barely remember when I was young enough and romantic enough to even consider it.

That all said, good luck and I hope you found the one.!

I'm new, so excuse any of the dumb questions I may have...

But what caused the colt to die? What causes the colt to take everything else with it, and do other corals do this as well, or just the colt corals?

What could have been done to prevent this? Or was there any type of signs that could have prevent this?

Sorry to hear about your crash.

What gives chip, have you found out what caused the colt to die? any speculations? I can picture it judging by the size description, kinda big...I can see how that would take out a tank....

P.S. Cupric>>>>Very funny on the GF stuff :D

I'm 32, and have had 3 long-term live-in relationships. Enough time (15 years total) to know what's good for me and recognize the 'bad' signals.

1. She loves fish. When I even brought up the fact that I should just sell the clowns & anemone and give it up, she got mad. She loves my pets & hobbies b/c they are a part of me, and she wants a reef in our home.

2. She's making a huge den out of two back rooms in her house (the walls have come down) for my furniture, my tank, my lizards, and she's excited about it. Picked out the colors to match the furniture I'm bringing, even...

3. She already has three kids (only one lives with her). ;) She can't have any more, so no problems there...

4. Not golden retriever, samoyed instead. He pisses on the carpet from time to time. :D

Hee hee...thanks for the advice, but the tank size is 120. :D

My spouse told my nephews he knew I was a keeper because I drove him to a strip club and waited for the phone call to go pick him up.

Sorry about the tank crash. Good luck with the gf.

A small update, morning of 7/27...

Looking at the tank before I came into work, I may have a few more pieces survive. The large green scolymia (7") and two huge wellsophyllia brains (9"+) I have look like the polyp is still intact. So, I'll be bringing them into the shop with me this afternoon to place in the 'miracle' tank for recovery.

I'll post more later on...

Peace,

Chip

Same here, much luck to everybody in the tank and to you! Large, random death is never any fun, but it's good to hear that so much did survive, especially the old guys. I wonder how many people are suspiciously gazing at their overgrown colt's right now...
