At lunchtime today I found it...water is milky-white...90% of coral is completely dead...can't tell if clownfish and anemone are alive...

The only thing that could've happened this quickly is my colt dissolving and taking everything else out with it.

Well, this is what I get for never being home, eh?

I'm pretty lost right now...have no idea what to do with myself...

Just venting...

Sorry to hear that, Chip. :(

Take a deep breath, man. It's important to think clearly at this point.

Just curious, how long were you away?

I've been staying with my girlfriend...I'm planning on moving in with her within the next few months.

...and here I was wondering what pieces I'd have to get rid of when I downsized the tank (we can only fit a 4 foot tank where we want the reef in her house).

Now I'm wondering whether or not to even set up another tank...I guess I'll have to see what has survived.

:(

Peace,

Chip

Sorry, I don't mean to cast your grief aside, but is your girlfriend the one you just had a blind date with last month?

Maybe your tank was trying to tell you you're moving too fast. 8O

Having moved in with a girlfriend and now preparing to move out a couple years later.... - My advice is to at least wait until after the wedding on setting anything up.

I think I gotta agree with reefnutz..

And sorry 'bout the tank.. :?

Sorry to hear about that :(

I do have a question though, do Colts do this often? We have one, and I noticed last night instead of the pinkish/muave color, its polyps were retracted and it looked dark on the ends, almost black.

the polyps of a colt can get to be very dark, as the coral reacts to light and the polyps color up

a dark 'tinted' polyps appearance is quite ok :D

my old colt was a dark brown polyp color w/a light pink/beige body, and did very well

it depends to some extent on the particular type of lighting, and exactly which species of coral your 'colt' actually is - quite a few different sinularias are sold as colts

Wish we could help Chip, sorry bruddah!

What have you done to fix this? Major WC and such?

All I had time for was a 10gal water change. I'll head in early tomorrow and give myself a few hours for clean-up and sifting thru to see what's alive and what's not.

The colt was 20" tall and 15" wide. :(

My anemone was 6 years old and 20" across...the clownfish were 6+ years old, too (my first SW fish). I saw neither them nor the anemone when I did my w/c earlier.

We'll see what survives tomorrow morning...I'll post an update here.

Thanks for the condolences...

Peace,

Chip

I have to go with my gut feeling here...and that tells me to move right in. This relationship has been much much different from anything else I've encountered. There's risk, to be sure, but I'm willing to take that risk.

I've done the move-in thing before, but I was blind to what was going on in the relationship. I'm wiser now. :)

Peace,

Chip

oh man chip...I'm so sorry. :(

I may be going up to Crevers tommorrow, if there is anything you want me to hold in my tank until you get yours going again your more than free to.

When the green/orange polyps that you sold me start spreading your free to take a frag.

Your favorite customer,

To see my tank white out and dead is the absolute worst feeling I have ever experience. Good luck. You will recover, just like I did.
