i figured it would be pretty cool since there are a few more nano tanks that were just born... so what do you all think... throw some ideas my way and lets get this rolling ;)..

of course this will be with the approval of the fellow Moderators and Admin...

good idea tony, but with every contest there must be some sort of rules. is there going to be just one contest for all or are you going to have multiple ( sps only, mixed, softies etc).

I like it :D. I might actually take the time to get my tank into tip top shape ;).

I think 30 should be the biggest nano.

Question: Are we only going to count the amount of water the main tank can hold or would it be the entire system? Cause if it's the entire system then I'm already disqualified.

My thoughts on "official" nano size:

In math nano is defined as being a billionth or .000001. In other words, it's very small. IMO, tanks should be considered nano when their size is a fraction of the average tank size. While determing a national average of tank size would be a feat in itself, I would consider a tank of 75-90 gallons most common. Because of this, I consider a nano tank as one with a volume of 20 gallons or less. As far as sump capacity, in the real world, a sumps volume is a fraction of the volume of display tank, the same guidelines should be applied for a nano sump. I would think that with a 20 gallon display tank, a max size of 10 gallons for sump should be considered.

I agree with Zero on 20 display 10 sump max. I never viewed or believed the 33g+ cubes were considered nano's. 24g jbj or aquapod is probably the max the size should be. 33g finnex cubes are pretty damn big imo to be considered a nano.

The whole methodology behind having a nano is the micromanagement of parameters thats nearly impossible to keep super steady in a tank 20 gallons or less. You'll never get the same stability as someone pumping 65G - 200g that has auto top off and litremeter running to buffer the system unless you have impeccable husbandry. 25g+ is pretty easy to maintain with the amount of water and biofiltration in the system.

If your having a hard time finding a skimmer thats proportional to your tank then its def a nano. :smash:

You would definately need to subdivide this into softies/LPS and SPS and then mixed.

how about a "you know your a nano tank when..." contest to go along with the tank contest :)

you know your a nano tank when a bucket of salt lasts about a decade.
you know you have a nano tank when your head won't fit inside the tank :D

all our tanks can be "small" it just depends what you compare them to.
a 120 compared to a 450 is small. a 450 compared to a 1000+tank is small, compared to a real reef, we all have nano's :Blurp:
