Thanks for the offer, Bry, but I'm itching to get water flowing in the tank. :)

I was just looking at my aquarium supplies and I have a Lee's fish holder. you the plastic doohickey that a fish store will use to hang in the tank to catch a fish for sale?

I wonder if that would be OK to modify. It's molded, small, and I can cut some teeth in to it.

How about this, its very getto but it will work the same as wazz's suggestion....

You need two PVC Caps, the smaller one just big enough to cover your bulkhead fitting, the larger one big enough to cover that and reach up high enough to get the level you want in the tank.

Cut half of the inside one off, the bottom half

Cut slots in the outer one, or just cut off the top

There you have it, completely HDgetto'd out by knucklehead....

There has to be some everyday something out there that will work and look cool. Just gotta find it. Maybe a trip to Walmart . . .

Hey, just read through the thread... I'm starting up a 70 gallon, and will have the tank drilled with 2 bulkheads for an overflow. I'm planning a similar overflow design, but am wondering if it is necessary to add the elbow pointing down on the inside of the tank? I will have the 2 bulkheads enclosed by a skimmer box, made out of black acrylic, with teeth skimming the surface etc. If I do not add the elbow on the inside of the skimmer box, what will be the conseqences (not being a true durso design) More noise, more air in the sump?

Thanks...[/i]

What would be so wrong with something like this made out of PVC? Noise? Cheap looking? My aquarium friends will make fun my cheapo design?

It looks nice to me, but I can't comment on the noise...I wonder if you would get slurping sounds.

Yeah, slurping sounds! :P

There is a possibility you will get some noise. Pointing them down is similar to a durso overflow.

What about painting the glass or acrylic black. Can that be done or will I just be asking for trouble.

I think you will be asking for trouuble. Unless you are painting outside of the tank.

I think you might get some noise. You could just put an in tank "stockman" They do not take up much room.

Here is the one I think you asked about in a pm

Its just a PVC coupling glued to the elbow with slots cut in it. Yeah its ghetto but it did work.

Now, it had a number of problems.

1. It was noisy, unless I had a small air hose running down the back of the drain. Even then it would flush every once in a while.

2. Its ugly

Now, I modified that into something I really really liked, that really worked great, but once again it looked ugly as hell.

take what I have and stick a larger cap over the top of it, so the slots are up inside the cap.

Then there is never any sucking noise from the tank. You still have to have some sort of air going in the back to break the siphon or it will be a true siphon.

Why not find some sort of black desk organizer, some times they sell them at wall mart or staples. If you find a one with a large enough compartment you can cut away the excess, cut some slots in it and silicone that puppy on.....

Funny you mention that because that's exactly what I thought of today. I'm hitting Walmart tomorrow.

I don't think that would look ghetto at all. Quite elegant actually. The outside cap could be ABS, and you could use PVC pipe (rather than a cap) for the inside part. Then you could easily remove it for cleaning.

Actuallt looking back at how you tank is drilled a cap that is big enough to reach the surface would be kind of big.
