Matt thanks for the show. You are lucky to be involved in such a project. What is a ballpark budget for this.

Ooooh, that's info I wouldn't know and couldn't tell ya if I did. :D

The budget for the entire building is around 400 million. But that includes lots of stuff like a 6 story rainforest, planetarium, etc...

Our scheduled opening date is "Fall 2008" at the moment.

Here's a pic of the "experimental" tank that's going now. 20,000 gallons and around 18 feet deep. One of the main purposes of this tank was to see if it was possible to artificially light corals in a tank of this depth. We have some H. magnifica anemones at the very bottom that seem to be quite happy, as well as some stony corals like Montipora and Echinopora that are growing. It's lit by several 1kW and 2kW lights.

The fish list is right around 250 fish at the moment, with a goal of 400. Some of the highlights on the fish list that I can remember off the top of my head:
Pomacanthus imperator (huge adult)

Naso vlamingi (full grown)
(2) lituratus
unicornis

Siganus guttatus
punctatus (full grown, soft coral muncher)
(10-15?) unimaculatus

Lots of Acanthurus spp.
(2) leucosternon
(5) japonicus
(2) achilles
sohal (fully grown)
(5) lineatus (still juveniles)
mata or xanthopterus, still not sure.

Ctenochaetus spp.
(11) tominiensis
(6) strigosus

Zebrasoma spp.
(6?) scopas
(6?) flavescens

(12) Paracanthurus hepatus

Somewhere in the neighborhood of
(90) Chromis viridis
(90) Pseudanthias squamipinnis (lots of males, changing females, etc.)
(4) male Pseudanthias pleurotaenia
(6) P. tricolor

(6) Caesio teres (Fusiliers, awesome hardy fish and we're going to get many many more)
A pair of Harlequin tuskfish
A pair of Niger triggers
A harem of Genicanthus lamarckii
Same of G. melanospilos
A full grown lunare wrasse
A full grown clown trigger
Marine betta that hides all the time
A couple squirrelfish
3 cleaner wrasses
One Halichoeres chrysus
3 each of Chaetodon kleini and miliaris
Chelmon rostratus
A family of 8 or so ocellaris clowns that share an enormous H. magnifica that split.
2 clark's clowns
A maroon clown

that's all I can think of right now....

Here's a shot I took of the experimental tank back in February Matt. Great growth going on there, will be really nice when the big tank gets this full!

And the propagation area. Keep 'em growing Matt!

Well if people are sharing shots... here's some I took well after the damn thing was filled with water :) (pre-frag tanks) I want to say 2004 simply because that's the date on the picture files as saved on the web. However, I know it's when they opened because I went back just about every freeday afterwards waiting for it to be filled.

Sorry for the green tint, but it was kinda of green my camera over emphasized the green though.

The whole tank

A look at the floor through the side, you can see some anemone and clams down there which are long gone IIRC.

Almost same shot area as the one the guy above posted (except his is less green :))

I got quite a few more, but I dont want to spam up this post.

That's SF tap water for ya! :D It really was pretty green when it was set up. Much clearer now. The shot I posted above is the most recent available from around March of this year.

I was gonna ask if you're going to use one REALLY big RO/DI unit or a bunch of little ones, but it looks like tap water is the way to go on this big of a project huh?

How's the PPM on that tap water?

Not sure! It's not the most ideal situation. We notice cyano patches here and there that will spike in isolated systems at the same time. We're therefore assuming it's a source water issue. Fortunately when we move back to the park the water will be taken directly from the ocean.

So I found some pictures on the web of the Academy in progress--

You can see shots of the "living roof" being installed. It's one of the larger and more ambitious "green buildings" in the world.

And some more shots below of the tank being water tested and further construction.

Fortunately when we move back to the park the water will be taken directly from the ocean.

Hope you'll also be shooting it through a super high powered UV sterilizer, with the sewage treatment plant right next to ocean beach, I wouldn't say it's ideal water... "Look mommy this stream of water feels warm!"

Lets just say I've known a few surfers who have gotten flu like illness after going surfing there.

So in case the schematic is a little hard to read, it's a bird's eye view of the tank showing the 5 main windows. The upper right is the largest window, "buddha belly". The window at the lowest point of the frame will look up and to the left (60 foot horizontal distance) over to the pop up window at the top left side of the frame. The plan right now is to place a colony of garden eels near this window.

I don't know about UV but yes, there will be a filter of some kind. Engineering issues beyond my pay grade. :D

Hey there! Been off the board for a long time, but starting to get that itch again to finally set up my tank- so I'm sniffing around again! Used to work at the CA Academy where Matt is now(not in the Aquarium unfortunately!)- man what a project! It is going to be incredible. We'll have to score some preview tours from Matt ; )
