Guys.....

My Building will shut down all electrical power for 24-36 hours this Wednesday at 6.30 am. (this is practically tomorrow, since it's the wee hours of Tuesday).
The fishies are not going to make it. :frown:
I guess what I need is a GENERATOR (right?...).
Can you lend me one for a day?
Please leave me a detailed message at 646.642.3457, no matter what time of day it is.
I'm in Manhattan but will come to pick it up if you don't live close by. :snail:

Big Thank You from the Fishies, Yana

How can they just shut the power off to entire building for more than a day? Especially in this heat. Also how much notice was given. I have to imagine the residents were given more than a day's notice.

I'm very sorry to hear about this and I hope you're able to find a solution to this. I hope that others reading this realize how unexpectedly power outages occur. It is imperative to plan for these types of situations as they happen to 2-3 members every single summer. Battery powered air pumps or a vortech on a battery backup, even a nanostream or Maxi-jet on a battery backup made for personal computers can be a lifesaver, literally.

Go to Petco or Petland or whatever and buy 2 or 3 battery powered airpumps and connect them to airstones. They run on 2 "D" batteries each and IME, a new set of batteries will run close to 24hrs. Buy some extra batteries and this should allow you to keep dissolved oxygen levels at sufficient levels to keep your fish alive. Additionally, you can also use a cordless drill with a paintstirrer bit to whip air into the system every few hours for increased gas exchange. Good luck.

How big is your tank and how much bio load?

Get a Hurricane battery(rechargable) operated air pump. Set it to lo and you have ~24-28hrs air.
~$80.00

Get a second one just in case and run it some time in the middle of the outage.

Also freeze Ziplock bags of water, 3/4 full, and dump some at a time to the tank. Be careful with leak.

Battery pumps and ice cubes will not keep your entire tank alive for 24 hours with the heat wave we are having.

One of my client's breaker tripped for more than 24 hours before we found out while he was in summer camp. No adverse effect were visual. The temperature has just risen to 78 from 74 after 24 hours. That was one of the hottest day last week(the same day that there is shut down in upper westside). With all electricity out-that is no light, no pumps to generate heat or for heat convecting, the temperature would not change too fast. Therefore, it depends on what and how many bio-load the tank has then we can tell if the temp. method will suffice.

Guys....

I am writing this on batteries from my computer. There is no electricity in the house for the past 3 hrs. 140 women living here, it's a dorm run by catholic Nuns. Luckily, the Super (who knows my Fishies well) took this to heart and at the risk of getting himself in trouble, connected me with Con Edison's shunt outside. It is a weak current, I can run either/or Fan or Filter. So I will alternate them, as the day goes by. Needless to say, I'll have to remain home, and please pray that the Nuns don't find out about the power - they might take it away. The cables are in broad light for all to see, running right through the main lobby - just pray they think this is Con Edison's stuff.
Thank you for all who offered help!! I rarely partake, but this community fills my heart with Joy!!! To Timber's question, No, there wasn't much of an advance notice. The Nunnies posted a message a month or so ago saying that major electrical work will take place SOME TIME this summer - but with no dates. Only on Mon. we were told it's happening on Wed. But mine bldg is special housing, a dorm - i don't think this exact thing can happen to most of you.
My tank is small 26 bow, 3 fishies and a few shrimp. A Flame Angel, a Goby and a Damsel. Because it's tiny though, temp. fluctuations are felt quickly....
I may not be able to log on later on...
My cell phone is the only working thing.
You can call me for encouragement if you wish ;-)
Love to All, Yana

I hope that the current being run is enough for your tank to keep on going. If you need cool RODI water let me know I always keep at least one gallon in the fridge. I know how bad it can be in lil nano's like ours (I have a 12G), but let me know. See if someone in the city might have a UPS system that they can lend you for a day.
Best of luck Yana
