i think you should follow njrc's example, and if someone has a disinterested non participating guest, they should not be obligated to donate (pay) an extra $20 dollars. is this a npo organization to help spread knowledge and awareness for the advancement of the hobby. or a business focusing on profit? but i suppose that's just my opinion. i do hope the event goes well, and perhaps i'll see you all next year....

Thanks for your opinion. NJRC is a great club and we fully support them and value them as members both here and there!

Please direct further questions to [email protected] or the RSVP thread.

Thanks again.

:sad2: Sorry, Randy...your very poignant post on supporting Manhattan Reefs as we strive to help spread knowledge and awareness for the advancement of the hobby was completed ignored. As were the posts stating only the final week of nearly 7 weeks of RSVPs would not include a free "disinterested" guest.

Well, if they are truly non-participating and totally disinterested then they'd probably be bored to death by the event and would have a better time shopping. Tis the season. Let them/her/him loose on Manhattan. But if there is some interest and they want to attend then I think it's appropriate to pay. Creating a web site and putting together these events is, I'm sure, very time consuming and if 20 bucks helps then great! Not-for-profit doesn't mean everything is free, especially in NY.
One certainly wouldn't say to the ticket vendor at Yankee stadium "My wife hates baseball and is here just to get me hot dogs and beer, I think you should give her a free ticket".

MR is not a NPO.

However any profit made goes right back into running the site, we are lucky to break even. That is why the swap and other events are crucial to keeping us up and running.

The time we invest is free, servers, and support is not.

... that said, if one free guest is allowed per member (or whatever the official rule is) having a cut off date is silly and somewhat arbitrary, IMHO. Especially since I can't and didn't find any reference to it on the "invite" and only heard about it through these posts. Did I miss it? I just joined recently and I don't have the time to scour through the forums for every post that may contain information that I'm not even aware exists in the first place. ya know what i mean??

I understand, and I'm sorry for the confusion. There was NEVER a +1 option listed in the invite, but a lot of people knew from previous swaps that we let people bring in a guest. When every single person was asking if they could add a guest, well, we started to run out of space. The easiest way to make sure we had room for the real reefers was to make everyone pay an equal amount.

We really want everyone to have a good time and be able to bring their non-reefer friends into our group. If you were really confused about the issue just PM me and we'll work something out.
