It is frightening to see the damage that global warming is wreaking on our planets reefs and to think that one day, in the not so distant future, all that's left may be the corals in our own glass boxes.
I applaud the scientists working toward understanding the reproduction of corals so that extinction does not become reality.

It all begs the question - what can we, as individuals, do to help reduce global warming?

I am an advocate of using less electricity in this hobby. This actually prompted me to research about the LED stuff. Many members should have heard my "speech" on making the sump same level as the DT and use float valve instead of a pump for ATO whenever possible... blah blah blah. I think I have bored Wolverine57 and his wife in the swap for over 30mins of this(Actually, they said they found my GREEN ideas interesting). I hope I did not bored you guys here either.:lol_large

Sanjay, thanks for the links. As informative as ever. As everyone tends to agree, how do we reverse the effects of the last century and the industrial revolution? The last 100 years has done more irreversible damage than all of time before that.

Are our glass boxes going to be the salvation that keeps the 'reefs' sustained.....albeit encased in our homes?

I would hope not.

I would hope that the reefs in our glass boxes will at least serve to expand the number of people who can appreciate the beauty and preciousness and increase the pool of those willing to act to save them.

I pray and hope for your vision to play out. The speed at which the global warming has effected our natural reefs just scares the daylights out of me. If we, as hobbyists, can lessen the impact on the raping of the natural reefs, that would surely increase the chances of survival. Long live the concerned and responsible hobbyist :hug:

I'm guessing that co2 levels in the city are ridiculous. Anyone know what typical co2 levels are in Manhattan? This obviously will have a negative affect on our aquariums.

I am sure that we could create solar storage units and small solar panels dedicated to saving electricity meant just for aquarium use. I am going to look into designing something of this nature.

Global warming is one issue. Coral/Fish harvesting is another side of it. I'm all for aquaculture and mariculture above wild caught/harvested coral and fish. Buy from your local hobbyists or a reputable source that aquacultures it's corals to reduce depopulation of the reefs.

I find the thought of not having the reef any more very sad and to think that one day be only see through our small glass cubes as said above .

Ahhhh yes, another sobering reminder of the great job mankind has done with this beautiful world...
On a lighter note carbon scrubbing air filters that take Co2 out of the air using my newest favorite addition to my new reef system 6% hydrogen peroxide solution have been developed.... But the way the cost of gas would go up if these filters were to come into play, would not be appealing to the average working class citizen and crash and burn like other great ideas to save this wonderful world with it's backward thinking society... Like the electric car.. But HYbrids did make it through.. Now only if I could make the choice between a porche or a almost as pricey hybrid,,,hhhmmm
