I am wondering if anyone has ever (or ever heard of) Acroporas losing Tegastes (red bugs) without any special treatment? If so please detail any actions which may have caused the pest's disappearance. Here is probably the first picture of this pest which I produced in February 2002.

If someone had done that successfully it would be listed as a sticky on every reef forum world wide.

The only thing close would be to remove all acro's and starve them out.

I've seen colonies lose them for no apparent reason, almost as if they self destruct. Nothing different was done to the system.
Now, I don't stress over them any more, certainly no interceptor, as I'm pretty sure the Trapezia crabs help a lot.

Vouching for Jason.

I can vouch for what Jason is saying. His reef was clearly infested several months back, and as of 2 weeks ago when he and I were inspecting his tank there were no RedBugs visible. But given the enormous diversity in his system, I would not be surprised to find that one or more creatures were eating the RedBugs. Trouble is I don't believe even Jason can say with certainty what it was that did the bugs in. Atleast there is hope now that a "natural" solution is around the corner.

Thanks for sharing Jason!

Rob at GA told me he used a turkey baster on a customers tank that had one acro which was completely infected. After a few weeks of blowing the bugs off he said they could not be found. I would think this would have just spread the bugs to all the other acro's faster, but apparently that did not happen. maybe they got eaten while in the water column?
