I know I'm going to regret posting this, but here are the results of the latest salt study. If people get hysterical and start changing what is working for them based on this ( like every other time a study has come out) I'm gonna scream. There is discussion on Reef Central if you want to be part of the buzz. Oh and me, I'm sticking with Instant Ocean because it has worked well for me for nearly 15 years.

well don't scream at me, but at a quick glance coralife looks pretty good. and that was a salt I never had considered using. it was high in all the right levels and low in all the things you don't want in your saltmix.

coralife is high in the bromine and low in the conductivity though. but its interesting results, especially finding out which prands are high in silica, phosphates, ammonia, and nitrite.

Tropic Marin pro-reef anyone? Expensive as heck but it seems to do me justice. I haven't dosed calcium for quite sometime and my levels are usually about 500. Any thoughts and advice if this is not a right choice are weclome.

Don't worry latino, I'm with you on the "Chem Retard".

I'm with Randy, am sticking with my IO for my reef. Although I may go back to coralife for my FOWLR.;)

Tony, lets know how that works out for you.:lol_large

Thats it. im not using salt mixes anymore. Im peeing in my tank from now on.

But then your ammonia levels will kill your fish and corals! lol:biggrin:

So I guess a partnership should be made between IO and TLF because it seems that you will need a phosban reactor if you use IO. It would be nice to find a reactor every time you open up a bucket of IO.

Im stickin' w/ IOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Been using it since 1992.

in the end none of them are "best" really. they each have good points and bad points.

the testing is cool though. it lets you see what's good and bad then you can decide what works for you. fwiw after using a few types of salt I don't see any difference between them as far as the tank livestock is concerned.

Me either. I have tried almost all of them. I used to use Tropic Marin Pro religousy but decied there was no noticeable difference so I went back to Reef Crystals. I use Oceanic for my FOWLR.

I think far more people have problems by switching salt mixes in a knee jerk way based on the results of the latest "definitive" info, than if they just kept doing what they were doing. I also find it very interesting that each different testing regime has come up with wildly different and often contradictory "winners".

The truth is none of the mixes are all that close to natural sea water, none of them seem particularly consistent from batch to batch and most of them will work just fine.

what i meant by best is.... which 1 has the least amount of unwanted matter in it? im currently using tropic marin pro .... i ve noticed it had phosphates and maybe some ammonia but then again im not using ro water so i couldnt telll where it was comin from ... but i rather not spend the money if another brand is just as good or better
