He wants to bring back the commuter tax for people coming to work in the city
if they are working here, they are using our services (EMS, Sanitation, etc.) I prefer to tax them than to raise local taxes so we can subsidize all the guests.

I am the service" N.Y.C firefighter" and would be taxed because I don`t live in the city. Does that seem right?

no that's just dumb. there should be exemptions if it does happen.

I kind of see the point, that everyone who works in the city should chip in for the cost of maintaining it.

but how many other cities do this?

but millions will be taxed and that should make more funds available to get you a raise.

perhaps city workers should be tax exempt under the commuter tax.

i like his ideas on improving business. it's different, very simple, and easy to see how it would work.personally i like him as a mayor for the city, he has done well overall, but of course there are areas in need of improvement.

Ezee I have been in the lobby once and I like the tank Idea. Maybe mayor mike should put tanks in every firehouse, precinct, and ems base so we can relax more after he takes the credit for us making the city cleaner and safer. Mayor mike needs to do more with his brain and stop asking everyone else to do more with less. TIM I agree 1000% with you!!! Because mayor mike's got the knob on the first engine right? He's the first car on the scene at the gun run in bushwick? He's doing CPR on the 5 year old who got hit by the car in midtown? :banghead:  GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

maybe that's what he needs to get a taste of reality. he should go INSIDE a fire, see how he likes the heat, smoke, loss of sight and hearing while he's in there. why not have him work on an engine for a week.see how he deals with it and wether or not he thinks Firefighters deserve a raise.

Maybe he needs to go on that gun run and let us know how it felt shitting bricks ('cuz i'm sure he would) wondering all the different ways things could play out.

last but not least, it would be nice to send him out there on that pediatric cardiac arrest everynow now and then and see how it affects his performance.

Finally, after having felt the heat, shitted bricks, and having to deal with the stress of caring (in the emotional sense of the word) for the people youre supposed to care for (it's our job to do it in the physical and emotional sense of the word) and watching them die or hurt, i think he would have a change of heart.

i think i don't like bloomberg so much right now, lol. i mean, i think he's a smart guy.he knows working conditions make things soooo much better, right??improves productivity, keeps your workforce with you, everything just keeps getting better.but those of us who work in the shittiest conditions, have to do more with less.contradicting, isn't it?

nobody is perfect but bloomberg is definitely overlooking the obvious when it comes to city workers.

these days every large building in NY is protected by security guards, you would not get past the lobby. especially the bloomberg building where the mayor could be ;)

if you sign up for one of their 'talks' you can get in.

(this is usually for customers of the bloomberg service).

or make believe you want to apply for a job...

Security

The security for the building is very tight. If you work for a company that has a bloomberg terminal you can take classes at no charge and tour the bottom floor. I doubt that you will be able to stroll in. You may be able to sign up for a guided tour.

Commuter Tax

Melt,

Hmmm. Although I don't have a political interest in this topic, I'll bite.
I belive all commuters should be tax.....if you don't like it work where you live....

That seems like a very broad statement. I was just wondering, since you are a fellow Brooklynite, would that be the same if they taxed us to work in Manhattan? Many of the people I know, work in Manhattan and live in one of the outer boroughs. I believe most of the employed people in NYC are employed in Manhattan but can't afford to live there, so I am not sure that it makes sense that the richest borough could be able to tax all of us for the priviledge of working there. Commuters add value to an employement area, via shopping, dining, etc.

Of course the flip side is, the remainder of their earnings get spent in another place but blanket statements like that always make me nervous.

I am not sold on either side of the coin but I am not sure I see the merit to the commuter tax.

were residents of Brooklyn/Queens/Bronx/SI charged the commuter tax back in the day? I thought you already paid taxes to the City of New York

is that what he wants to do? the boroughs are the city, I don't think that would work.

if anything I think it might make some companies want to move out of the city. it's not really going to attract people to come and work in manhattan.

I don't think the commuter tax would apply to residents of the 5 boroughs, because they aren't really commuting. I am not 100% sure what the case was back when there was a commuter tax, that's why I ask.

Example

Hey,

Actually, I was just giving an example that was relevant to our situation. Sometimes we tend to make comments about situations that directly affect others but when the same situation affects us, it can give a different perspective.

I highly doubt that is what Bloomberg is planning! LOL
