I have nothing against the crew. There is an issue with management. Everything should stop if there is a situation like this and all should concentrate on the people without power, not new installs.

And by the way... How does the union feel about Con-ed bringing in all the outside contractors? Who is hawkeye? All the trucks I do see working on the lines are from that company...

Not so much contractors but when **** hits the fan and we don't have the man power to cover it we call in other utilities to help, everyone does it just today in long island i saw an entire fleet of a utility from jersey helping out. I am not defending the company but if you saw them running a new install on underground cable and the power outages are over head that underground crew most likely is not trained for overhead work its a completely different animal so they really wouldn't be of much help in this situation, but from a customers point of view it does not look good

The guys in the trucks do a great job. It is the administration that has messed things up entirely. The guys in the suits.

The spotters on the other hand some of them could use a daily pulse check. But if you are going to hire a living traffic cone I guess you really don't care what you hire LOL. Not all of them are this way but some are as smart as an empty Snail shell.

Ahhhh there is a God. Power came on late last nite. Casulties 1 radioactive dragon colony 1 finger acropora minicolony. I would like to say that this thread was never opened to bash any field workers. Just upper management that penny pinches everything they can. Union workers do the best work in the world, that is why they are not cheap.

Just an fyi,
While you're crying and clapping for the union guys out in the street remember they're
getting union wages and benefits at time and 1/2 or double time for their noble sacrifice. Which you pay for with the highest utility rates in the nation. Sorry guys I know its hard work but when its easy work you don't get less money. And non union workers don't get 4-6 weeks vacation 12 sick days plus 11 paid holidays a year. Not feeling especially sorry for you not seeing the kids awake for 3 days a year.

I agree with this statement totally. The unions have the companies by the balls these days. One of the reasons why the economy tanked and the auto industry is struggling. But this is another issue with politics.

Unions are there to protect their workers. Without collective bargining with companies they can do whatever they want to their workers. When white collar workers are getting 25k, 50k,100k bonuses no one cared. Now that they economy is down people are miserable and complain. Well hey. Did most of you know that most union members (electricial, carpenter, teamster, etc) take long furloughs so that the other half of their members can work a little bit while they are laid off. Did most of you know that in any type of construction there are layoffs quite regularly. Be easy on union members. Their lives are not all gravy

Echo echo......... (to PD's posts) let's not be upset at the fact that some have taken precautions that others may have never thought we would have to take. And for all of the people who show face, loyal to who it is that they work for, you've earned it!!. According to previous posts, we are covered in our salaries :) well MONEY Is not what keeps us (if I may speak for a few) away from my families, but AFFORDS time with time with our families. Be it 40 hours or 80 hours, feel bad for a person who can not make the time! If you are right in mind, we are all working for the same.

I understand the reasoning behind the unions, this was never the issuse. The issue is that unions sometimes go overboard with pay rates, benfits etc(not all are like this, but in the auto industry it has gotten out of hand). I think that is the point zobra was making before. The layoffs are happening everywhere so I dont feel bad for a union memeber over a white collar worker. My father worked at the bank of new york for 29 years and was recently laid off, so its happening everywhere.

The problem isn't that the union workers are being treated outrageously well. The problem is that the average non-union worker is treated spectacularly poorly.
