woke up to the smell of burning plastic this morning. the new Jebo 36" T5 HO light i bought off Ebay that seemed to work fine its first day yesterday went up in flames. the basement full of smoke and that noxious plastic fumes.

moments like this, wish i had a camera -- a weird polaroid moment. already pissed, as have a 24" i bought on the same day that hasn't arrived yet but is on its way with dhl.

luckily the 45 gal is on a metal stand. otherwise the wood stand would have feuled an inferno awakening. the 26 bow happens to be on a wood stand so i figure im lucky its the 36" light that arrived first and was defective.

no wonder why these things are so cheap!!! :happysad:

it looks like it started from internally exposed wiring heating up or something like that, between the ballast and the first quick connect plug.

Hope everything is ok...Aye! Gotta be careful with those things! I have a Odyssea PC fixture which is hands in hands with JEBO. I really have to upgrade my light soon then.... eeeeeak.

Oh man that sucks! So you hasve no lights for your tank now?

i know, what a way to start off, considering i got out of this hobby once i went off to college yrs ago, not expecting to cum bak

luckily the tank is bare, i am still waiting for some LR to be fully cooked, and for a few parts here and there. its just a small fowlr so no big deal. i got an old perfecto dual light strip over it for the time being. i literally cant wait to see my first spec of corralline appear on the glass.

just be careful yos with all that electricity and wiring stuffed under your tank.

I have the same problem with my odyessa t-5 lighting. They don't wrap the wires well enough, so there is always chance for a spark up. Dude glad everything was saved though. I'm done with aqua-traders. It doesn't make sense to save a couple of bucks to put fire hazards above our tanks!

I hope everything is ok beside your light. Yeah, Jebo and Odyssea lights are known to catch a fire. I've read too many people who said it caught fire. Do not order their product next time.

whoa, I'm happy that you were home! and that it was not worse.

we really need to be careful, there are so many electrical devices plugged into out tanks, it's imperative that we check them all to make sure they are safe!

Wow, glad you are ok. As a reminder, please make sure you keep a fire extinguisher somewhere in the house. I keep one in the kitchen, so i can always use it somewhere else.

Sometimes we try to save a few bucks, but in the end it's just not worth it!

Hot diggity damn,

Im glad nothing major happened, just another reason to high end from the beginning ;),

But seriously, there must a MR guardian angel because although things have been hittin the fan for me (my bubble counter broke on my solenoid like 5 min ago), in retrospect anything could be much worse.

How about a nice class action lawsuit? makes me all fuzzy inside :D

thank god he's on our side.
glad to hear you are ok.

one of my biggest fears is a fire resulting from all the wiring on my tank. i'm no electrician, so i just have to trust that it's safe.
(my second fear is my tank crashing through my floor).
