Is anyone importing fish or coral from Cuba?

I know it has the best beaches in the world but are there reefs and what types of fish and coral can one expect?

Thanks Wayne

I'd read in another mag that Castro is being very protective of the natural habitat around Cuba. The reefs are, from what I'd read, the best you'll find in the Caribbean, the closest to the original state out there (although the reefs outside the mangroves of Las Pargueras in Puerto Rico appeared relatively untainted to me, too, but they're hardly untouched).

There is some concern that, now that the country is being forced to open itself up to international trade and tourism it may quickly lose these resources. I'd read, though, that skin diving is a problem during certain times of year because of some "creature" (not identified in the article I was reading) that causes awful hives-like reactions for most people. Then there's that stuff they call "monkey hair". :| (ew)

There is very little coral in the Caribbean that has any commercial value. Even if collection was legal in Cuba or Fla....... what color brown would sell at retail? Same goes for Hawaii, What coral would we collect? Pavona is a maybe in Hawaii ....but there are very few marketable corals there as well. Fish from Cuba? Sure, but Dominica and Haiti have flooded the US market already. Now Ascension Island! Thats an Atlantic collection point to die for......

Wanting stuff from that fair and just society?

When my friend went to Cuba in the 80s, she couldn't even bring me a shell off the beach - it is unlawful to take anything at all.

Naesco,

There is at least one Canadian importer of Cuban livestock, as far as I know there's only one exporter in Cuba and they're more interested in FW so don't put alot of effort into collecting marines.

Do you know who the Canadian Importer is or the Cuban exporter is?

Going for a trip to Cuba Wayne? Sorry, but the guy who's importing from there certainly wouldn't appreciate me sharing. Also, as far as I'm concerned this is information hobbiests don't need access to anyways. :)

Well I wasn't planning on importing any for resale. I was just wondering if the freedom loving Republic of Cuba allowed Canadians or Americans to take some home with them when their vacation was finished.
Do you know by any chance?

Actually you can take as many as you wish ...........just not alive. Eat your fill and then re-enter the states using your colon as the transport container. Why is that one can eat almost any reef fish one catches fishing in Cuba.........but cannot take one home alive? Does the cuban reef miss a fish more if the removed fish is still alive living in an aquarium ?

What are you saying Kalk.
Are you saying that there are restrictions placed by the Cuban government on exporting ornamentals?

Gee , how soon we forget. .........Does Nuclear missiles pointed at me and my school mates ring a bell? If my neighbor in the house next to me says its okay for Russia to set up warheads ....and point them over the fence at my daughters window........Im going to remember it for a long long time.......Even forty years later , Im not going to come to any of this neighbors house parties ....even if he invites me over to swim and sun. See, some times its the thought that counts. It doesn't matter how long ago it was......If forty years from now ....Assamma Binladen asks you to come down to his land and have some "sun and fun" What will you say ? I still say no to Castro...........But maybe I was over re-acting back in the 60s about the two hundred missiles and such ...........actually getting under my desk with the other children at school during "drop drills" was kinda fun.........its the part about learning why we needed to practice drop drills .......the idea that one day our school might be plastered with bombs as we hide under our desks, that I did not like . Thank you Castro .......thank you so much for your part in shaping my childhood.

So Kalk,
Castros to blame for you?
First Cienfuegos flies into a mountain,
His best friends have to fee, some go to jail or join the resistance.
Che couldn't even stay [and survive] in the same country as him.
The dictatorship outlasts every other on the planet...
and now this?
Thats just too much.

Canadians can visit Cuba, or at least they still could when I left... no embargo there that I am aware of.

Too bad you don't know your history.

Why was it OK for us to do the same exact thing (Place nuclear-tipped missles in a country on their border), but not OK for them to retailiate in the same way?

Oh, I forget. This country has no coherent rational foreign policy, and hasn't had one since before the Cuban Missile Crisis either...

Welfare from Russia and guaranteed sugar sales to same.
Great tribute to Trotskys legacy...
Castros sellout to Imperialist communism ruined it for many college intellectuals and suburban socialist 'revolutionaries'.
Centered in the "welfare of the people" doctrine...his PR machine was able to mimick the real thing to some.
When Russia stopped paying the rent...it all was laid bare.
Steve
PS.
In isolation from an affluent artifact like an aquarium trade, it is no wonder they still have fish left....despite serious food fishing to feed the nation.
