The "business of protecting the reefs"?

If yah get a cool 100K, it would be a start. I would only involve those who actually can do the work, ie. trainors, and a bookkeeper. If you yourself pull a salary, and really have nothing to offer, what makes you any different then the other "reef protecting business's" like MAC?

IMO, a good strategy for training PI divers is to target younger divers with less family responsability, ie (kids), hire them on kinda as ,indentured servants for 2 weeks (bad example), with their aquisition of the netting, contacts, etc needed as part of the contract, and incentive to stay on camp. They would require less compensation, and have more initiative than old divers trying to learn new tricks, imo.
While teaching them about resource conservation at the same time.Petty bickering yields no results.

Eddie that has got to be the dumbest thing you've ever said  We have child labor laws in this country, that I think should apply to the rest of the world.

Few aquarists realize the dangers faced on a daily basis by the collectors who catch the fish for the trade. In contrast, the collectors are acutely aware of the risks involved, since many of them have had friends either paralyzed or even killed because of unsafe diving practices. They have often witnessed, or experienced for themselves, the results of diving too deep for too long, with limited or faulty equipment, and without emergency procedures if anything goes wrong. Many people, including an extended family and friends, depend directly on the income of a collector, because work opportunities are so few. Therefore, the impact of a dive-related injury or death can be far-reaching and devastating, well beyond the collector's immediate family.

Steve,

I agree that the draft bill (HR3469) needs improvement. One area that I liked was the penalties for false certifications. I don't accept that the MAC Certification system works, or that it has to be the only certification system. I would rather see the CDT used to certify marine aquarium fish (MAF) as being "cyanide-free". This was being done previously by the IMA. It can be done again.

The MAC will need to prove that their system of certication is reliable (that it ensures that fish were not caught by destructive means such as using cyanide to capture MAF).

The Draft Legislation can benefit the trade (including the collectors) and help conserve coral reefs and their associated fish communities, PROVIDED IT IS IMPLEMENTED WITH PROPER SAFEGUARDS TO EXPOSE FALSE CERTIFICATIONS.

I also have some concerns with the wording pertaining to mariculture to preventing the escape of reef organisms under culture. If the culture is done in the ocean in the country where the organisms such as coral are found, this provision is not necessary. It would prevent the mariculutre of corals, giant clams, and live rock in the ocean. I am in favor of such endeavors in the country of origin (e.g., Philippines and Indonesia). We don't need US Legislation banning the import of maricultured corals etc. from the country where they naturally occur.

Who said I had nothin to offer ? I think I can out collect Steve 8)

Dizz, sorry if you took that out of context, but this is the real world, people start work younger in most parts of the world, than the US.They do not have our curriculum,I think

I was just stating, that by targeting "younger divers", that I feel would be more receptive & take more initiative (about conservation), than "old" divers tryin to learn new tricks, you will stand a better chance at sustainable collection in the future, than the instant gradification that the current divers need.

Not babys dizz, I said younger divers, with less family responsiblitys,ie(kids)......without kids........not kids

EDIT:

lets just be freinds, bro

"he has to be...

My goodness, CF. You've got something there.

Since when does a teacher actually have to know the subject matter?
I used to think so but the MAC thing has informed me otherwise...and its treason to disagree.
Steve
PS. Besides, they have some talented Filipino " assistant trainers" to show them how to do it. They sort of teach the teacher...to then teach.
Only a few of them are left in the Philippines though, about 35 or so of the very best ones are working abroad in Saudi, Belize, Vanuatu, Tonga etc.
. This brain drain has hurt progress in P.I. but at least business people know talent and they pay for it. NGOs have largely been jealous of this talent and don't want it to get to center stage and usurp them in the limelight.

So..cortez

What would you suggest be the first step in a plan of action, for the conservation education that the collectors teachin the mac guys how to collect, need ?

Is that not what they need ? Is that not a even trade ?

I dont understand, mabey I need to get over there stat, and analyze the situation first hand so we could get some results, policing the reefs

Don't they need the education, about conservation that Mac provides them ?

The first step would be to admit their approach isn't working*, analyse why, and adjust the approach.

(* Insert "well enough" if you need it toned down...)
