From my perspective, which seems to diverge sharply from yours, creating a financial advantage to protecting a reef will keep it protected better than trying to create a moral or "for the future generations" reason for protecting reefs.

A "tour" for a couple grand to harvest a few dozen Ricordea may not be moral but it sure is a really good financial reason for "tour" companies to protect the reef.

A commercial interest like this will create "thousands" (read $) of reasons to not let wild Ricordea populations dwindle. I'm really sorry this is the way things happen these days but if you work with it instead of against it the goal of saving reefs is even easier.
