Actually most of the sites that sell LE,rare, exoctic type corals do not make a living of it. Most of them have so called "real jobs" And most people that grow out LE frags and sell them either charge less then they paid or the same. No body is getting rich unless you are Walt Smith or somebody that is HUGE like Walt. The little Retailers put in countless hours into there business just to make a living not get rich!

By the way I have never purchased a Coral from Steve so I have no vested interest in what he does!

And remember it all starts at the wholesaler. Most of them are watching these boards now and pricing there corals accordingly even though they still pay very little from the collectors. In the end it's the hard working village collectors who lose out in my eyes! They are making pennies on something the wholesaler is making dollars on!

"My frag can directly from Joe who got his from Bob who got it from Steve Kanooka's mother colony!"

I personally think Steve Kanooka has done wonders for this hobby. He's a personal friend of mine, too. Great guy.

Peace,

Chip ;)

P.S. Bob & Joe are top-notch peeps, too.

Yah, sure, blame it on the wholesalers

Truth be told, it starts not stateside, but island side. Many exporters have caught on to the "fad" corals, and priced accordingly (in most cases). Some wholesalers own their own station, or have a vested interst in them. In those cases, typically the money is made stateside.

Now I do know a few wholesalers that mark stuff up quite high, and it all sells. If people didn't pay, he wouldn't charge so much :D Supply and demand is a, well, the B word :D

Steve should be commended for what he is doing.
It is simply unbelievable that someone who takes the time to frag colonies and sell them instead of removing them from the wild is comdemned.

I wish you the best of success Steve. Carry on!

Who ever said Steve doesn't get, and hasn't gotten stuff from the wild? Learn your history Wayne, Steve was a wholesaler of wild, and still gets stuff rom the wild. Steve does really push fragging, but he's never said wild collections are bad and he doesn't suppor them. There's nothing wrong or unsustainable about wild collections if done right ;)

Gresh, come on...you know Wayne is clueless about everything that goes on in this hobby, whether he posts in the For Sale forum or The Sump.

Peace,

Chip ;)

I read through that thread and this thread but i agree with people on both. Sure his name shouldn't be brought through the mud but some of his prices are way out of wack such as the green polyped toad for $500

This Sarchophyton species is very rare and typically demands a high price on the open reef market whenever it is available. It has only been rarely imported and most colonies sold have been grown from small fragments of imported parent colonies. The polyps are brightly colored green. The parent colony that is producing the captive grown offspring that Reeffarmers.com is distributing is being maintained by reeffarmer Tracy Gray within his soft coral reefs. Steve Tyree is maintaining offspring of this coral for reeffarmers.com in a 100 gallon corner Berlin reef aquarium that was setup by Tracy Gray. Within this captive reef the coral is positioned at about 21 inches from a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium Metal Halide. Water current is weak. Starting in May 2003 ReefFarmers.com is allowed to distribute 1 small farmed offspring of this coral per month. Small is actually a tiny colony about 2 inches tall. Small price is $75.

You mean the one he sells for $325 less then you posted? It sells for $75:D

i don't really think tyree has anythign to do with the huge jump in the overall price of every coral that has come to market in the past 5 or so years. What did? the acan craze, and GAS PRICES of course. As soon as the war started, prices on liverock and corals jumped a good 30% from what i saw and that's only natural, the cost of bringing them here went up, a lot. Once people became obsessed with acanthastrea ( i think the main reason being it was *OH MY GOD* something they couldn't have) all of a sudden every brain, blasto, favia, scoly, - basically anything that could have been passed off as an acanthastrea, instantly became taxonomically reclassified at a charge of an extra 50% above normal retail value, and afterwards, they cleverly didn't drop them very much. I think it's easy to forget that before the acan craze you could buy a blasto for 50 dollars, a red scolymia for 70, a favites for 39.99. This was far different than what tyree and those like him do, tyree did not intentionally try to trick his customers to make a quick buck. He might use 20k and a reaaaallllly good camera, but at least he gets the species right
