I love the "bigwig guys".

"Last week I bought 12 tropheus, I spent $300! So you should give me 50% off all these fish, I'm a big customer". Funny how they always seem to say that when they are standing in front of a $12k arowana.

My favorite are the out right scammers though. One of the other employees was talking to some guy about how he and the owner had gone to school together and how he always gave him great deals so you have to give me a deal on this fish, blah blah. The owner was standing right next to them.

These guys will do anything to get their "deal". In our store if you want a discount you have to talk to one of the 2 owners or me and one other guy (we are empowered as we can do multiplication without counting on fingers). I can't count how many times I've turned a sale by offering somebody 10% off if they take all of the tetras in a tank rather than 8 of 12 or something.

My favorite story is this stoner guy I was setting up a 120 gal FOWL tank for. He bought everything from us in one shot, like $1200 worth of stuff. We usually offer a 15% discount on full setups but that wasn't good enough for this guy he wanted me to come down on the base price. Just for giggles I said "I'll take $50 bucks off the top but then I can only give you 10% off the package". Guy sits there for a second, mumbles to himself a bit and then says "Okay". I didn't have the heart to tell him.

I even had one customer that had a tank with a turtle in it (yea UV light does not go through glass very well).

How many times have you heard "I don't need a UV light I keep the tank right by the window"?

:D And then when you tell them that uv light does not go through the glass very well, they think you are trying to scam them.

it's all about people relating to animals as inanimate property/objects-especially when they cannot relate/communicate to those animals directly, the way we do with dogs cats and horses.

I've sold a few plecotomous, chicklets, guffies, allergy eaters, and even a few "saltwater enemas" in my day.

It's incredibly common for people to call them allergy eaters, even people that seem well educated 8O . It's just amazing how many people call them allergy eaters.

I had one customer the other day, that asked for an allergy eater, I was out of the small plecos, and so I said "I'm out of small ones, but I have a big one". She said "no that's too big, I only have a 10 gallon tank." So I said " I have some Chinese algae eaters". She said "are algae eaters the same thing?" So I explained "No, allergy is what you get in your sinuses." She looked like a deer caught in the head lights. It went right over her head. So I told her that the Chinese algae eaters were a different kind. She said " I just need something to eat the slime". She knew the word "slime". So I bagged one up for her.

And so many customers want fish that will eat fish poop

I had a customer looking at a book trying to decide which tang to get next. She saw a description of one tang, that it eats detritus off the bottom. With great pleasure, she said "Oh good a fish that will eat fish poop"

I'll have customers that will walk over to something on the shelf, and knock stuff over, make a big mess, and then walk away from the mess, and start asking me questions.

So I'll ignore them, walk over to the shelf, and straiten up their mess, walk back, and then ask them "Now what was it you were saying?"
