  1. Please post NYC/NJ reef stores

I was just at Underwater World in Roselle Park, NJ. It's about a mile off the GSP (Garden State Parkway, not...) Pretty nice (small) store, about half marine. Large selection of fish, LPS and softies, in tanks with crushed coral substrate. Water was clean and fish looked beautiful, can't argue...

  3. Poll: What will you not ever put in your reef tank (again)

Green sand polyps--spreading uncontrolably, can't be peeled off the rocks!
  4. Will gsp overglow tridacnid?

I had a Crocea get "undergrown" by sand polyps. The clam apparently got uncofortable and began to switch position for the first time in months. I cut the byssal threads and moved the clam to a new location. Now it's under halides and looks much better.
  5. Your favorite tip or trick...

When I feed flake food, I take a pice of rigid air tubing, wet it in the tank, dip it in the food, and swish it around in the tank. This gets the flakes under the water surface so they don't get sucked down the overflow. The bigger rigid air tubing is great for vacuming the little debris piles...
  6. Do I need to feed my sps coral?

Nice receipe for coral food in Eric Bornemann's Aquarium Corals, pp 64. Just made it. Prepare to spend $30+ on ingredients though.
  7. Any suggestion on Oceanic sump conversion?

Oceanic is now doing actual sumps of the type that are popular now in addition to their trickle filters. They had brochures t MACNA, maybe your LFS can get you one. AFAIK, they are the same heavy-duty glass construction as the tanks, with the usual sump bulkheads, partitions, etc.
  8. Oceanic wet/dry conversion?

No, Not the whole trickle filter. I just cut out the "tower" in the center the water is meant to run into before flowing out onto the drip plate. I left the odd-shaped chamber surrounding it, the one with the small opening in the bottom right for the water to flow out of. Then I ditched the drip...
  9. Oceanic wet/dry conversion?

If you are getting a used one and can't choose to get a sump instead... The whole thing is made like a heavy-duty all glass tank. What I did was to take a razor knife and cut the central chamber away from the wall and remove it. Then there was room for a little reef devil skimmer (super reef...
  10. Razor blades -safe?

Just a comment about losing razor blades in the tank: I dropped one into the rocks last year and almost had a heart attack. I used a strong magnet on a stick to extract the blade
  11. heres a question, especally for jersey people

I'll be there Brian! I got some xenia, star polyps, leather coral and some montipora frags to get rid of. That GD montipora is so fragile, it frags itself! DanConnor: Yes RIP Aquarium Stock Co. where I bought my first SW fish (c. 1975). There's no sign of it now, the "pass through" store has...
  12. heres a question, especally for jersey people

Sorry, don't remember it. But... Do YOU remember (pre-reef): --Ocean Gallery (The original one) in Montclair on Bloomfield Ave? --An unidentified saltwater store in Boonton. This guy's idea was lights on 24/7 (less stress for the fish!). All his tanks had a thick covering of purple cyano on the...
  13. Where to buy salt in Central Jersey

Adam's Pet Safari in Chester will get you the 300 gallon BAG of Tropic Marin for around $80, special order, pick-up only. Say you saw it in Reefs.org!
  14. Where is your Reef Tank located in your house?

My tanks are in my "critter room" on the first floor with my 2 parrots and bearded dragon. The birds appreciate the warm, humidfied atmosphere in the Winter! Also, the first floor is directly on a concrete slab and convenient to a small bathroom.
  15. Unwanted Livestock--Suggestions Welcome

My LFS took back my overgrown 5-year-old Snowflake Moray when I converted to reef. (sniff). When it didn't sell after 3 months, they waited till they got a SW shipment and told the distributor it was sent to them in error. And back it went. My hope is that, by this method, it went all the way...
