  1. HQI double ended vs. mogel socket

That a 250 W DE is equivalent to a 400 W SE is ludicrous. Why would anyone buy the SE ? Why do the makers state approximately the same lumens/watt (you could sue.....) ? This is an urban myth amongst reefers, speak to a lighting professional. You think they throw away millions of dollars...
  2. Alkalinity - Ca imbalance - why?

You might want to test your test kit (duff test kits are often the cause of a bad "news"). There are few ways to get out of balance. One is to start out of balance (eg a duff salt mix, or duff water...not RO). Another is using iron based phosphate absorbers (they can drag down alkalinity)...
  3. If you could buy an RO filter...

Buy the cheapest available and use DI resin afterwards if necessary. If you have very low water pressure, get a booster pump. kim
  4. can you coat metal to make it not rust?

Paint it, using a variety designed to adhere to metal. What is so complicated ? kim
  5. ro/di remineralization

Interesting.... The old Bingman analysis of salt mixes notes the presence of ammonium in newly mixed salts, which disappears with aeration (I assume by diffusion). http://web.archive.org/web/20030608135355/http://www.animalnetwork.com/fish2/aqfm/1999/mar/features/1/default.asp People in the...
  6. Has anyone tried or heard of Eco Aqualizer??

Really ? GRT is tough....beyond me (and I have a DPhil...). But these guys did not do stuff that is laughable. That is what I do. Not them. kim
  7. Lighting; PAR, Intensity, Spectrum?

Kadir, The trouble with PAR is that chlorophyll doesn't simple utilise 400 - 700 nm wavelengths. Depending on the type, it is quite specific as to which bits it uses. So PAR is an indicator, nothing more. If halides emitted a continuous spectrum, this wouldn't be a problem....but they do...
  8. Lighting; PAR, Intensity, Spectrum?

First, you have a very good understanding of the issues. You don't know all of the solutions. Nor do I. No, intensity doesn't (in my mind) affect penetration. If you start off with more or less intensity, this will be directly reflected in the illumination in your tank at all levels. Twice...
  9. Calling all people in the uk!

Your IP is logged..... You've probably done it already, but do read a few threads, here or on RC, UR etc. on user experiences. Seems that feedback is "good", but you have to be ready for the action. kim
  10. How salty is to salty??

It certainly does. The oceans may all be one piece of water, but it's not all the same temperature nor all the same salinity ! Also salinity varies with depth. Surface water varies between 32 and 37.5 salinity, a density at 25 C of 1.021 - 1.025 kg/l. In general it is greatest at the...
  11. Calling all people in the uk!

Wow, That's brave. Exit isn't licensed in the UK....it is a chemical that kills animals and in the UK you need to register and license such a substance. Due to the expense, Salifert haven't done this. Not sure whose problem that would be if someone made an issue of it. Buy now ! kim
  12. PH Falling; ALK HIGH; and Cyano ?? Please Help

I just want to say I agree with elpescado. Totally. While your attention to pH is admirable, your problem is, as he says, almost certainly due to elevated CO2, either too much in the room (bad ventilation) or insufficient circulation in the tank. If you are concerned about pH (and it doesn't...
  13. Japanese Scientists Raise Non-Toxic Fugu Pufferfish

It won't catch on. The risk, and the art of the "chef" (ie the bill !) is where it's at. Where's the bragging potential ? I am reckless, I am rich...therefore I eat fugu and I am sooooo sekusi ! 8O kimu (Fwiw, it never worked for me...... :( )
  14. REEF FISHES VOL 2 and 3 from the HORSE'S MOUTH!

    (i) I hope you signed it ? Maximise revenue..... (ii) You need an agent. 8O kim
  15. REEF FISHES VOL 2 and 3 from the HORSE'S MOUTH!

Scott, Thanks ! :D I'm gonna try to keep this short because my PC keeps crashing. Amazon reacted in a quite different manner this time. Apologies for original error, apologies for earlier response, rebate, extra rebate. More apologies. (I guess I buy too many books......). So now I am...
