  1. Lawnmower Blenny Questions?

My Blenny(Benny) eats the nori I buy from the grocery store, as well as Formula 1, frozen brine, and algae from the glass. I have read that nori gives little nutritional value, but it fills his tummy and he has been happily eating for the last two years. Now I have another problem. In the last...
  2. GSP

To answer your questions about effects from/to other corals, my Euphelia keeps them from opening. The GSP have made my Euphelia much more aggressive. As for the hammer, mines too far away to affect so I can't say for certain, but I doubt it. My hammer does not seem aggressive, but YMMV. My GSP...
  3. Cleaning Tank

I used to vacuum my sand also, until I learned better. From what I have read, the sand should not be disturbed unnecessarily. This will give the critters a chance to grow. There is little that I have found living in my tank that is harmful, only unsightly. I have learned to leave it be, except...
  4. Is Xenia Toxic To SPS?

I have had xenia on the same rock as some montipora, and other than keeping the xenia from attaching, it didn't really bother the montipora. The polyps would still come out even when it contact with the xenia. Phil
  5. Bumble- Bee Snails ?

About a year or two ago, they were popular as a clean-up crew, but were deemed to be not reefsafe. I don't remember the specifics, but I don't remember anything about problems with fish or other inhabitants, just coral. HTH, Phil
  6. LFS, Lauderdale to Miami

Jawz.net at 1701 West Broward Blvd in Ft Lauderdale. I checked them out once when I was in town. They had a lot of fish, several shark tanks, a decent place. The only place I found in the area. HTH, Phil
  7. Stores in Chi-town

Harbor Aquatics(harboraquatics.com). The website gives directions. Its usually worth the drive. Call to see what they have in stock.
  8. High pH and High Salinity

I have a good Tropic Marin hydrometer that I have checked against other large hydrometers and I trust it. I will check alk and calc tomorrow to see that those levels are OK. I may be overdosing(50ml per day of each part in a 75g).
  9. High pH and High Salinity

I made an error in my level for pH. It was 8.5, not 7.5. I tested it again today and it was down to 8.3-8.4. I didn't dose today to help lower it. Salinity is OK now at 1.0245. Does the pH sound excessive? I will dose less for a few weeks to see if the hammer recovers. Thanks. Phil
  10. High pH and High Salinity

Hello, I have a hammer coral that has not been opening up fully as of late. I tested the pH and salinity and found the pH to be ~7.5 at peak photo period(9:00pm) and salinity was 1.0265(normally keep at 1.0245-1.025). Do either of these levels sound extremely high? I reduced the salinity...
  11. Small holes in Hydnophora HELP!

Whew! Thanks for the replys. I have seen no other signs of distress in the Hydno. It still inflates fully, especially at the tips. I'll wait and see. Again, thanks for the reassurance. Phil
  12. Small holes in Hydnophora HELP!

Hello, I need help, please. I have a fist sized hydnophora that has developed small holes about the size of a pin head(about 8-10 holes). The skeleton is visible, as if something were eating it(I have two peppermint shrimp). The coral is under 440W VHO and 200W NO. It is about 14" under the...
  13. Hammer Die-Off

Link, My hammer just recently was stung by another LPS. I had tiisue damage and it was receding more each day. I did not have the white oozing that you describe which leads me to believe that your problem was caused by something else. I cut the affected portion away to remove all dead tissue...
  14. getting rid of Green Hair algae

I'm not a good resource for bulb life since my tank is only two years old but from what I've read, VHO bulbs last no more than a year. I believe the same goes for MH, but I'm not sure about PC. YMMV. Phil
  15. getting rid of Green Hair algae

tim000, I have cut down on green hair algae growth considerably since changing my VHO bulbs to new bulbs. Also, I was running three actinic and one 50-50. I replaced one of the old actinic with a new 50-50 and have seen little green hair algae growth since. I know that all new bulbs will help...
