Rick, the leg fell off the original linckia. Then new little tiny legs form on the end that broke off. Notice on the left side of the leg in the picture are small tiny microscopic 'new legs'. The leg with the new growth is called a comet (because of its similar appearance to a comet with its 'tail' shooting across the sky).

Seven months later and my little dudes are still alive (even survived a tank crash) and have produced several comets. These are awesome starfish!
