Thats because its more about the lens than the camera. Nikon and Canon have the lenses, even if they use Sony sensors, its all about the GLASS!!!!! NO?

Try Ritz camera i love this store they don't gonna charge tax from you and they have very good prices + free shipping of course.
You should try Nikon D7000 it's very nice camera and you don't gonna complain for next 5 years or if you really want some killer... Canon 5D Mark II full frame for $1800!
You can also get Sony alpha nex-3 or nex-5 that's regular digital camera but you can change lenses

Consumer reports gives Canon's a higher rating than the Nikons. I dont own either brand but I usually refer to consumer reports before I make a big purchase. Its only a slight edge, but its an edge. Nikon D7000 only has a slight edge of Canon's entry level Rebel t3( $800 price difference). Just some food for thought. Again i dont even own a SLR.
