What kind of test kits do I need for a reef system?

Phosphate, Nitrate, Nitrite, Calc, Mag, Alk and PH off the top of my head

Nitrate, calcium, magnisium, alkalinity, PH,Phosphate .. In the beginning you need ammonia,nitrite in addition to the ones listed above...And if you buy cheap ones you'll need a test kit for those test kits...:spin:

Zuska, you might think about investing in a VERY GOOD book that you can
lean a tremendous amount from. I have one in mind, and it's not very hard to read.
You can also use it to look up just about anything you'll need to know.

how much do they go for?

you can get a 250w retro kit (which isnt a fixture) for around 200... it includes the ballast, bulb, reflector and wiring.... all you have to do it put it together and screw it into a hood.

I would also recommend subscribing to Aquarium Fish Magazine. Its really good. A lot of info there for beginners and experts.
