There is a third option; keep at it, be determined, and you can persevere. I'm fighting the same battle at the moment. We have a newborn at home. Thing is, I setup the tank not for myself, but for my 9 month old son! Once I convince myself of this, it was easy to convince my wife. But I agree, its not easy to do. And I spend way too much time with the tank than I would prefer.
Good luck.

My son loves the tank. WHen hes being fussy or we have to wait for my wife to pump. I take him down and he stares at the tank for 20 min. its better than plopping him in front of a TV

I did it. My daughter was born in December. Just have to designate specific times for maintenance. Sunday is my day, the earlier the better. It helps to have everything ready...when you do your water change, mix up next weeks while your at it. Unless you have enough storage for a few weeks. Simplify your processes (NOT SHORTCUTS). Have clean filter socks and underwear ready to change, media pre-measured, plenty of RO/di or distilled on hand. It all helps. I even made a water change tube with a ball valve installed and a pump. Pump out the old, pump in the new. (the ball valve makes it pretty mess free...wives like this!). Good luck and congratulations!

Yea def gotta stop by one say see your son and check out the tank. I think i might have solved a problem from that home depot orange bucket thread this morning, might be the reason all my reading have been so high

Cjohn1914 I wish I could but I have so much going on plus I never have time anymore to just sit back and enjoy the tank. I still am on the 50/50 about it but if I slack off on my maintenance then I'm gonna loose fish and coral so I rather someone who has the time and wants to take their experience to another level to have a jump start.

Newborns are easy... Wait until you have a 2 year old toddler who if pulling wires and throwing crayons in your sump.. My son loves the tank though. One of his first words was anemone and he still says "manemone"!

Sorry if this post reads like a threadjack, but this thread is scaring the crap outta me. And I'm not even in the hobby yet! I just signed up at MR to learn all I can before I start making my own reef tank related purchases.

So here's the thing: I'm a friggin newlywed. I was thinking of starting an aquarium because I find them extraordinarily soothing. I've been regularly dropping in at the nearby Petland just to look at the fish because they make me feel peaceful. And that's how I got interested in this hobby in the first place. It's kind of like my wife has her yoga, and keeping an aquarium -- to my mind anyway -- that was supposed to be my yoga, so to speak. That was the idea anyway.

But, after spending a few days reading, I've learned about the demands on one's time, the demands on one's wallet, power outages, tank crashes, etc., and now I'm afraid an aquarium, especially a reef tank, could have the exact opposite intended effect and actually put a strain on my marriage and stress me out as it's done to rsinanan415, especially if/when a baby enters the picture. :lovestory

Perhaps I should rethink this marine aquarium thing. Maybe I'm not cutout for it. Or at the very least, perhaps I should try to warmup to the idea of freshwater. :happysad:

:backtotop Sorry to interrupt, you guys. Good luck with the sale, rsinanan415. And good luck with that newborn! Congratulations to you and the misses.
