Yellow tangs are not $8 wholesale
I’ll try to find the price list, ? they were back less than ten years ago.. and as mentioned below, 12$ before the ban.
How do you think lfs make money? I have no problem paying 100/50 for a yellow tang even before the ban as long as it lives... finding healthy fish just gets harder and harder.. maybe it’s our location and i have used every LFS or most in ny... I did have more luck with AMA .... all
Others crap shoot , best are established of course... never lost one of those

I had 3 and a powder blue in my 265 and one died after about 18 months

The other 2 and the lifer blue did pick on it a lot

Now they are all happy
I wouldn’t try 4 unless the tank is really big

400 is really big

FYI in case you guys didn't know about global warming, there is a good documentary about it. The waters are just getting too hot for corals to survive. Chasing Corals is on netflix, and shows how the water temps are have been drifting upwards by 1 or 2C over the past 10-20 years. Its just a matter of time before Hawaii becomes a barren wasteland. It's already under way there, Indonesia, the Great Barrier Reef, etc. It's global and there will be more supply disruptions till aquaculture takes over completely.

Dude are they serious, that's crazy. Don't buy a yellow tang. I'm at the point where I put buy from hobbiest because stores have gone mad
Thing is some hobbiest do exactly the same as the stores, take advantage of the situation and want to sale at same store prices.
I saw a posting on R2R of a guy selling Yellow Tangs at $350 each.

I bought three at Island Fish and Scale for $120. They’ve been through full quarantine and are full medium size. My other tanks went to work on them for a few days but thanks to the great shape they were in when Ryan Francess sold them to me they did just fine. This was just a week ago. He has a full line of beautiful fish at fair prices that have been through a full series of meds to combat disease. I qt every fish I get and the ones from IF&S goes right in my tank with out a worry. Idk if he has anymore yellows but he definitely a has a hybrid yellow scopas I have my eye on. Just my my two cents. Yellows are a must have for any reef aquarium. Now I have three (yes my tank is big enough I actually have 13 tangs now with two small purple going in next weekend) and I love when they swim together. If you want a yellow tang you can choose to get one from other locals and pay a lower price but the Hawaiian yellows have the best color. So just make sure the ones u plan to buy at a premium prices are actually from Hawaii.

yeah the prices online is just ridiculous if you ask, but where would you buy local? I am sure most LFS knows there wont be anymore Yellow Tangs for the foreseeable future. I am just curious as to why the increase as I dont believe Yellow Tangs are endemic to Hawaii, please let me know if I am wrong.

Nice well of you do lmk how much for the yellow tang i still want one or powder blue
Trust me, you don't want to tranship fish. The list price is cheap but 80% of the cost is in shipping!! 20% will be d.o.a. and another 20% will probably die in the next few days. And you definitely don't want to put a freshly wild specimen in your communal tank. Commercial store water is "dirty" because of all the parasites and infections that occur due to the vast amount of wild and stressed fish. They have to use means of Copper and hyposalinity just to keep the infections at Bay. None of this really help the problems, usually just a bandaid. Your best bet is to find a wholsaler who act as the middle men and quarantine the fish for yah. Either way, unless you you have a business ein or plan to make a large order, they won't even give you the time of day.i much rather pay double for a fish that I know has been In a holding tank for a few weeks and is eating. I remember the former petswarehouse in copiague used to do like a 3 step bacterial bath for the fish before they housed them in their holding tanks which was regular salt water!!! Used to always go to them for my fish. I don't know of anyone else that does that I'm afraid, just not cost effective for them I guess

I hear that's where almost all are caught from. Not so much endemic but probably large quantities that make harvesting easy. Also sailfin tangs and black tangs are from hawaii as well.
