Well i finally have taken the plunge and started to get the bits and bobs for my new project. The cabinet and hood are real oak. There is going to be No pumps hopefully in the main display all closed loops so this is what i have planned at the moment.

Maintank

A mere 210 gals

Sumps

(all sumps to be in the basement)
a couple of huge rubber maids i'm planning on around at least 800 gallons. And knowing me maybe more

Skimmer

Reef Creations Skimmer (MR-2 ) run with a genx mak4 pump. Plus i have a spare euro reef and large aquac if needed.

Movement/circulation

2x Genx mak 4 external pumps for the closed loops(1200GPH each). Return pump from basement not decided upon yet. Bulkheads fixed in base and hard piped to the pumps. valves and unions so that they can be removed. All pumps will be in the basement.

Drainage

(main display)
2 overflows(wiers) with durso standpipes as this tank is going to be totally silent 11/2 bulkhead fittings with the 2 overflows blending into a 21/2 or 3 inch down pipe which goes down to the basement. This will exit into a 5 gallon glass tank filled with floss for mechanical filtration. Before entering the multitude of containers/reservoirs

Lighting

Lighting will consist of a 6ft coralife unit fitted with pc'c with a nice blend of 10k and actinics. This tank is only going to be a well stocked fowlr tank.

COOLING

( hopefully) should not be a problem with all the water down in the basement.

HEATING

Titanium 800 watt digital heater in one of the sumps and a 500 watt in the main display. If more is needed, i will cross that bridge when it is needed.

Filtration

The system will have 250lbs of live rock which is well matured and which i have run with for well over 14 months. Plus there is going to be 300 pounds of aragonite live sand (120lbs i already have and a further 180 to be picked up soon) There will only be about 2inchs of sand in the main tank. The remainder of the sand will be in all the sumps down in the basement.

REFUGIUM

Maybe? will have to see how much leccy i am drawing first

When i set my 11ft up i made so many mistakes which could not be rectofied after completion. So this has had a lot of brain storming so this tank is going to be correct at the beginning . Hopefully this will be started in the next week or so and will be up and running within the next month. When i get my new camera i will start to document it's progress. Broke my last camera last week

A bit more has happened the tank is now finished. A mere puddle 210 gals. Just need to drill it for all the bulkheads. The main sump is 410 gals with 2 x 55 gal aux sumps to finish it off. All the sumps are down in the basement. So gallonage at the moment is 730 gals (must be room for some more ............some where )
Return pump is a Gen x Mak4, plus the skimmer feed and closed loops are also run with these pumps. The skimmer is a reef concepts super pro 4 ft skimmer which has a little giant for circulation on a beckett venturi plus the Gen x pump feeding the skimmer runs through a Beckett 1408 foam head injector assembly. which uses a quality John Guest 1/4" speedfit air regulator valve. This should give excellant skimming. Plus i am using 300 mg's of o3 injected into one or either of the venturi's which is drawn through a large air dryer. Here's the main sump

An update. One of the sumps has exploded when i was drilling it  MMmm tempered glass is a pain. The main tank is in place all drilled with plenty of closed loops, they are running now but the sump drains and returns hopefully will be sorted tonight. The main sump is 410 and now at the moment only the 55 gallon sump so a total of 675 gals. I have 3 Gen x mak4's which are running the returns, closed loops and the skimmer. I have fitted an extra beckett venturi to the skimmer so there is now2, i have not run it yet so i do not know the performance. The genx pumps are very quiet and i am very pleased with them plus they are economical to run. I have used around 80 ft of plumbing in 1 and 1 1/4 sizes 8O It's mind boggling to work out where it all goes. 3 x 5 gallon buckets of various fittings, ball valves and unions :? The cost mounts up :( The wifey has ordered a new camera so i will post pics of it all when it is totally finished. :D

Ahh, the benefits of having a bit of space. I'm going to be moving back into a pokey Croydon flat in February. No chance of a big tank then!

BTW Gary, cheeky question, but you lost weight?

You guys are very observant  yep when i got divorced i lost around 60 pounds :D

La lawman ummmm dont know what tack means sorry  hope it has nothing to do with a hammer and nails tho

Talking about stones. A lesson for us all here for peeps who drill there own tanks (or get others to do it) I drilled one of my 55 gall tanks on wednesday on the front/back panel (which ever is front or back  ) and it duely exploded in front of me. now to anyone that has seen or heard a tempered glass tank explode trust me it is not a very nice thing. The exact sticker on the bottom said tempered base panel do not drill  what it should of read was tempered tank do not drill. After a lot of head scratching i contacted AGA direct. The first thing they said to me was this::
Was it purchased as a single tank or part of a package boxed deal????

It suddenly hit home the boxed package deal has thinnner glass to keep costs down by the look of it, so it is tempered glass throughout not just the base like quoted on the sticker attached to the base.
Anyways they did not want to know although admitting that it is labeled incorrectly It is not a real problem with the loss of a tank but the safety factor is an issue as well. So take care Thanks Garry Thomas 8)

I had some problems painting tanks when i was new in the hobby. I picked up a clear adhessive spray and sprayed the pane i was to paint. I used a brush and applied it to a thin layer. waited 10mins for the stuff to get tacky. then painted..

I had no pealing or anything. it was good stuff. I will see if i can track it down. It has been a while since i painted a tank...

my spelling sucks... I am on vacation...:D (less thinking.... more drinking!!) and my brain moves faster then the fingers... sorry for the typos..

Enjoy your holiday Ben. Some where warm and sunny i hope  I will post some pics soon but i broke my digi  The tank is up and running just a few small leaks from the huge amount of plumbing. My own fault this is what happens when the wife calls you for dinner mid way through solvent welding the joints  thats my excuse anyways  I had a small problem with my skimmer (Power pro pp3mdo Marine technology concepts Just over 4ft tall) which was duly modified. The 1/2 inch bulkhead was scrapped and duly replaced with a 1 inch item. This was sleeved down to a 3./4 pipe which goes up the center of the reaction tube. It is being fed with a Gen x Mak4 external going through a Becket 1408 venturi. This was not performing like it should but after lots of head scratching it was traced down to a small piece of plastic which looks as if it was left over from the manufactur of the item. There is also another venturi which is run by a little giant external. The skimmer now works like a dream. I'm sure it could be modded some  Plus i am injecting 300 mg's of ozone through it. So i'm down on gallonage at the moment with the loss of one of the 55's. Just a mere puddle at 675 gals  But there is hopefully another 135 at least (when i pick the tank up) Plus i would like to get a refugium set up some where on the system. I will work a way out how to get it in. :D
