Dear diary, here's the deal. I plan to convince the wife that a 120g will look much better in the living room than our (my) 46g bowfront (wish me luck). My plan of attack is to give her a fantastic anniversary gift at the end of Feb (and no, she won't accept a fish tank as a gift). Somehow I'm thinking this would not help my case :)spin:) as there's an ongoing debate about whether I give the tank more attention than her.

The plan is for a custom built 120g (not a lot of usable space in the appartment, plus still gotta have play room for my 17 month daughter who feels it is her duty to knock the tank and say "i" to the "ish." The dimensions will be 48x24x24 with starphire front, drilled at the back for overflow and return (maybe), with at least a 30g sump/fuge. I'm not so sure I want to use filter socks in the sump as I want to minimize maintenance. Will definitely get a phosban reactor, but may dose calcium. For water movement in the tank I'm looking at an mp40w. Any more flow will be handled by the return from the sump. I will definitely maybe (intended) need a chiller as my living room can get pretty warm sometimes and the A/C will not always be on. Will be looking for some type of monitoring system (maybe reefkeeper), ato, and controller for heater/chiller units. I'm still debating whether the tank should have no background or black or blue. Blue seems drab, algae growth on black is not pretty, but I've heard that no background might be more stressful on fish. Plus I want to hide the plumbing behind the tank.

For lighting I'm leaning towards t5 because of cost and maintenance, and yes - I know the bulbs need to be changed more frequently, but there's less heat and electricity usage.

I'm probably going to try to build the tank and stand. I want the stand to be a little higher than the standard as I don't want to have to bend too much to see some angles.

I'm thinking of a white sand substrate for aesthetic appeal but I'm concerned about algae growth. In the earlier stages of my current tank I had green algae "stain" my substrate and it never really came back to its original color, and whenever I keep the light on a second too long you know what happens. The black/white mix looks pretty good too. I will probably use the LR from my current setup, but I must admit that I'm leaning towards getting some from Tampa Bay Saltwater. There are a lot of good reviews on reefcentral. Cost will determine a lot of what I will end up doing though.

For sump return pump, thinking of going external - a little less heat in the sump, but will definitely go with the most quiet option.

I'm also considering that I will have the weight of both tanks in the same room while the new tank cycles. One option is to use our second bathroom as temporary storage (which will probably happen anyway). I'm thinking that the bath area was designed to carry the weight of a full tub so.... Now for that I'm definitely going to have to hypnotize the wife. Perhaps I'll borrow chief's hypnotic swirl.

All this on a shoestring budget. Ambitious? Yes. Possible? Weeeeelll, we'll see. This will take some time (a couple of months) as there are a few things that have to take priority right now, and I want to make sure the planning is as complete as possible. It could all go up in smoke, but hopefully if I put it in writing the goal will be a little bit more reachable.

Please comment. Thanks.

First things first! What are you planning as a the ultimate gift for your wife?:)

Sounds like you have it all pretty well worked out! If I ever have the chance to re-do my tank I will go with black sand.;) More pop.
I would go with a black background!!! Coraline will grow, and eventually cover it.:)
I would rather run the A/C 24/7 at a higher setting, and keep the living space comfortable for all.;) From my understanding a chiller will keep your tank cool, but will add heat to the room it is housed in.:(

possible if shoestring is 3-5 G$...before livestock!

lol - don't know yet, but I'm sure she'll tell me what I think I should get her :lol2:

Thanks. I may go black. I prefer the look, and the contrast potential - but then again the black/white mix caught my eye

Interesting, I didn't consider that the chiller would be a heat source. The main reason I would consider a chiller is that my living room appears to be over the boiler room, and in the winter that room is warm even when the rest of the apt is cold. The a/c running at that time would not be desirable.

Congrats on your well-planned upgrade! Will be costy...take it slow and simple and upgrade as you go.

Thanks Karman. That's the plan. That way I won't realize how much I end up spending. :knockedou

Funny thing is, my wife told me that a few weeks ago she had a dream that I spent $1.5mil on the tank (no we do not have $1.5mil). In the dream she smashed the tank and left me :smash:. A good dream in a way if it means we had 1.5mil to spend haha!

Dear diary: on Sunday (02/28) I finally got the wood for the tank stand (a diy project). The stand will be built using the template I found on reefcentral (http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1169964). I got the lumber from Ace hardware on Utica ave in Brooklyn. I would have bought from Lowes or HD but they didn't have the equipment to cut anything thicker than 1". At ACE they charged 50c per cut (no, I didn't have a power saw, and did not want to drive with 10' and 12' long pieces of lumber in the car. Worked out well enough.

My wife has been surprisingly good natured during the racket, even though she called the frame a monster. Dimensions (LxWxH) 49"x25"x34". I won't be putting on a top because the tank I plan to get is rimmed. With the stand being 34" high and a tank height of 24" the top of the tank will be 58" - I think a nice height so I won't have to bend to look into the tank.

Dear diary: so last night I got to setting up the RKE to monitor my current 46g. It's pretty cool so far. I calibrated for temperature and ph (the two probes that came with the device). The temp may be about 0.5? to 1? off though. I'm going to recalibrate over the weekend to make sure that temp and ph readings are close to accurate. So far I was able to configure the light timing and temp controller. I started late so I didn't get to the NET module. I should be able to find some time over the weekend to get that going. I plan to get the plyboard to complete the stand this weekend too. Hopefully get some paint on it, or maybe I'll stain it. Who knows.

Funny thing - my wife's been extremely calm and patient as I've been making a mess with the stand build (and sometimes even interested). Bear in mind that I live in an apartment so there's no real spare room. Perhaps it will hit the fan when she sees the 120g on top of the stand in the living room. My only salvation would be to make sure that it looks good. Initially I will be using the lr from my current tank and gradually adding more so hopefully I won't go through another diatom bloom. Her major complaint (of course) is that I'm so consumed by the hobby that it takes away time for her (and my daughter) so I've got to convince her that maintenance will be less. I've started using a chiller instead of a fan so top-offs has reduced. Let's see how this all goes. :shhh:
