Hey solbby any advice on how you have a 120 on the 4th floor w/o worrying your floor will cave in?

my father bought me the 90g as an early bday gift, but I have the receipt and I really wanna go 120 but im scared, I checked where I wanna put it and its in the corner of 2 load bearing walls (perpendicular) that go all the way down the house and meet the brick foundation and they rest on top of it.

I know im asking a weird and maybe unanswerable ques. but Im desperate..lol

you want to find which way the floor joists run and have the tank perpendicular to the joists. spread the load over as many joists as possible and you will be okay.

WOW guys thanks for the nice words! My tank is finally in the groove again, it is always a bumpy road but well worth the trip :D .

To answer Andre, I would say that one of my greatest fears is the tank falling through the floor. For the first couple of year I use to constantly check the floor. But the tank is now 7ish years old, so if it was going to fall through the floor I would assume it would have already (anyway I have had the apt checked by engineers and an Architect).

I have it spread out over at least 3 floor joists and it is right at the brick wall load bearing wall where the joists are attached to. So in my apt that tank is in the best possible place. One thing that I wish I had done in the beginning, just for added peace of mind, is lay down a long piece of plywood (5 foot long x 2 feet wide) to put the tank on. This would distribute the weight of the tank to two extra joists, probably making a total of 5 joist supporting the weight.

Shaun,

Is your tank skimmerless?
No I have a powerful skimmer on it. I have a re-circulating external DAS skimmer. It is an extremely efficient skimmer producing a column of extra fine bubbles. It really rocks, producing a cup full of nasty skimate every two days.

As for my tank specs.
120 gallon with a corner overflow attached to a 30 gallon sump/tank.
I have a DIY Calicum reactor that is rated for a 600 gallon tank. This reactor is huge.

External DAS skimmer.

In the tank I have two 6060 tunzes at the top of the tank and two maxijet 1200 that are placed such that they blow all debris to the front of the tank which is siphoned out during water changes.

1/4 HP pacific coast chiller.

My lighting is: 3- 250 watt DE HQI MH (2 10K bubs (L and R) and 1 20K (center) and 440 watts of VHO.

The 120 tank has been up and running for 7 years. The rock was in a 55 gallon that was up and running for 2 years before I upgraded to the 120.

THANKS! Do you see the parent colony of your spawning coral on the left center of the tank? That coral has gotten huge.

It is a A. lokani! the same species as a PM. It is more purple/teal than the purple monster but it has white polyps just like the PM.
