shaun how much sand do u have ? and also by adding the remote sand bed was the ca and alk usage went up?
It is hard for me to say since I have changed a few things since setting up the DSB, read below, :) .
Nice stuff, Shaun! How big is your remote DSB (ie what size tank) and how do you have it plumbed?
Up until three months ago I had a Ca reactor running. It was a DIY two stage that was very big for the system, it probably could handle many hundreds of gallons. I had about two full buckets full of media in the thing.

I decided however, to go with the two part system, mostly after seeing Kedd's tank and husbandry. Upon removing the Ca reactor I saw a big spike in cyano, something I never had in years!! My thoughts were that the Ca reactor was a remote DSB. It makes sense if you thing about it, low O2 levels, high CO2 levels, pH 7, perfect for ananerobic bacteria to do their thing converting nitrate to nitrogen. Removing the Ca reactor took away a lot of beneficial bacteria from the system, so I decided to add a DSB in my sump to put them back.

So my sump is a AGA 30 gallon that has a 4-5 inch DSB in it now, previously it was BB. BTW, the cyano is starting to disappear, :D !

Thanks, Shaun. I just switched from a calcium reactor to 2-part. I had chronically low PH, and it's been higher and more stable since I made the change. I haven't had the cyano problem, but it will be interesting to see if it pops up.

Did you use established live sand, and do you have any critters in the sump? I recently re-did my sump, and have a big empty spot in the middle I plan on using as a frag tank, but have been thinking of putting a DSB in it, as well.
