CerMedia is a company from Buffalo, New York, and they came to Interzoo to present an innovative new filtering material: MarinePure.

We didn’t know CerMedia before the conference, even though we heard good things about them from our great friend Francois of Aquarium Partners. So we were really glad to meet Leyda Vazquez, sales manager, and Paul Pustulka, general manager of CerMedia, and hear about their new filter material.

MarinePure is a ceramic-based filter material, an ultra-high performance biofilter that they were excited to present. The feature interested us the most was the high porousness, obtained through open cells. This perfectly suits the needs of marine and freshwater aquariums, and also of ponds and any other situation in which you need filter material.

The first thing we have to say is that MarinePure, being ceramic, is totally inert in aquariums, so there isn’t any possibility of contaminating the environment. We thought it was important to emphasize. I often fear inserting new things in my aquarium when it isn’t specifically written that they’re non-toxic or inert.

The good thing about this material is that it can be shaped any way you like. In the picture above is the classic brick and the spheres. Because of the high porousness of the material it doesn’t require a great quantity to obtain the filter volume that you need.

It can be used inside a filter, inside an external filter, in a sump, or in a tank. In short, wherever you find it more useful.

The combination of a wide surface and open cell pores leads to the growth of a thin biofilm. This film allows the bacteria to prosper because the nutrients are immediately available. Thanks to the open pores, the old dead biofilm is easily and naturally removed, and it won’t create an obstruction. The water flows easily through the filter, as you can see in the picture below, and not on the sides like in other, denser substrates. In this way it will use most of the surface for the growth of bacteria.

We are very curious since this material promises to remove ammonia and nitrite and to control the nitrate, both in marine and freshwater. So, encouraged by our friend Francois, who is pleased with its performance, we bought some packages. So expect a dedicated article soon!
