This beauty is the Rossmont Mover MX 15200. It is not an electronic pump; it has a fixed flow of 15.200 liters per hour, and a power consumption of only 24 watts. This pump was designed and manufactured entirely in Italy, and Rossmont has extended its warranty in Italy on the pumps to 36 months, one year more than the warranty period required by law.

The MX series broadens the M series, with a higher flow rate and many other interesting characteristics.
The MX series is made up of 4 pumps with increasing flow rates, the MX 9800 (9800 Liters/hour), the MX 11600 (11600L/h), the MX 13400 (13400L/h), and, obviously, the MX 15200 (15200L/h). We therefore have in our hands the most powerful pump on the market made by Rossmont.

Looking at the technical characteristics of these pumps, we see that they have an energy efficiency of 608 liters per watt, a level that is especially high when compared to some electronic pumps such as the Tunze NanoStream 6095, which not only has a lower flow rate of 9.500 l/h but also an efficiency of “only” 452 l/h; and to non-electronic pumps like the Tunze NanoStream 6125 with an efficiency of 545 l/w placing it at the same level of the new Ecotech Marine vortech mp40QD’s efficiency of 607 l/w, but with a higher flow rate, 17.200 l/h. 2015_03_mover, mx 15200, rossmont_04

With an RRP of € 139.90, this pump has an economic efficiency of 109 liters per euro spent, against the 47.5 litres per euro of Tunze Turbelle Nanostream 6095, 71 litres per euro of the 6125 and the 41 of the vortech MP40QD.

The contents of the package can be seen above: the pump, the mounting magnet, the add-on nozzle, the cleaning brush, the protective grid, the beautiful foldable box and the use and maintenance instruction manual.

Such a powerful pump should only be used in peculiar cases or in large tanks with a minimum length of 130 cm. The add-on nozzle can change the flow angle from 120° to 60°, which is very helpful, but the flow rate remains really high.

Technically, a pair of Rossmont Mover MX 15200 would be sufficient for a 700-liter SPS aquarium, as long as they are used alternately. With that setup, we would obtain a fixed flow rate of 20 times the aquarium volume, with only one pump functioning at any given time.

I installed the pump in my 400L tank, where it works only during daytime, along with 2 tunze Turbelle NanoStream 6095 pumps.

The Rossmont Italy Mover Mx 15200 has been functioning for about 3 months: for the first one and a half it was never turned off, and for the rest of the time, it has been on for 10 hours per day. This was a sufficient amount of time to find out about any little malfunctioning details or hidden defects, considering that during this period it was never cleaned. We like to mistreat our pumps to see how far they can get!

Using these pumps with hourly alternate cycles could lead to issues, but I personally think that with 2 cycles per day, the well known tide simulation, the pumps should not have any problems for a long time. The warranty is there and it has been extended to prove this!

The outer body of the pump looks like a semi-cylinder emerging from a sphere, with different axes in order to be adaptable to as many situations as possible. The water flows out from a circular opening, crossed by a small horizontal mount which doesn’t seem to impede the flow. The protective grid can be fixed, unnecessary if the pump is always on (it can only slightly reduce the flow in this case), but highly recommended for alternate-cycles functioning.

The Magnet

The attachment system utilizes a powerful magnet, which works with glass up to 19 mm thick, and Rossmont also sells, as an accessory, a stronger magnet, which works with glass up to 25 mm thick.

The magnets are very strong and are easy to use and to manipulate under water. They also come with an o-ring to avoid spoiling the tank’s glass.

This attachment method leads to a more protruding pump, especially when compared to  Tunze‘s product, but it is much more stable, thanks to the fitting pin placed behind the pump body.

Rossmont provided its Mover pumps with a Vibration Absorbing System, which should keep the pumps rather silent.

I tested this by first measuring the environmental noise:

Immediately afterwards, I measured the pump noise.

2015 06 rossmont mover mx 15200 dati misurati02

I found a 1.5 dB difference. It’s not much; the pump noise is really just slightly audible.

To measure the noise I used, as always, the professional phonometer VOLTCRAFT 320, digital phonometer IEC 651 Type II. Considering the type of noise I needed to measure, all the readings were recorded with dBA wave attenuation. The measurements were taken  at 120 second intervals and the phonometer was placed on a tripod 1 meter away from the pump.

Power consumption

It is quite hard to measure instant energy consumption. In order to do so, I used a current probe which recorded an electric current of 0.134 Amps. This is only a partial measure, as it was impossible to record the power factor (cosφ). Regardless, we can still make some interesting deductions.

The adsorbed current, or the power consumption, results are as follows:

Rossmont Mover Mx 15200 with a flow rate of 15.200 l/h: 0.134 A x 230 V = 30.82 watt x cos(fi)

Usually, a pump with a neodynium magnet, like the Mover, has a cos(fi) value around 0.85, while a pump with a ferrite magnet has a cos(fi) around 0.6. In this case, the energy consumption of the Mover MX15200 equals 30.82 watt x 0.85 = 26.2 watt. A legitimate number, very close to the 24 watt declared. But we must remember that the cos(fi) was assumed, since we were unable to measure it.

Considering an energy consumption of 26.2 watt, and the energy price in Italy of 0.27 euro per kwh, we could use this pump continuously for a whole year with a power consumption of 230 kwh, which would be the same as using a pair of Mover Mx 15200 alternately for 6 hours each, resulting in 62.1 euro per year, or 5.17 euro per month.

The impeller has a fantastic unlocking mechanism; just unlock a lever and the impeller comes right out. Nice and easy.

As we see in the picture, the impeller lock is combined with the unlocking system, which is incorporated in the impeller itself.

The Flow Conveyor

The flow angle is pretty wide (120°), in my opinion it is optimal for almost any marine tank. Rossmont also supplies a nozzle to reduce the angle to 60°, for a more direct flow.

As I stated before, I prefer a wider, softer flow, and I recommend the same for your tanks. The opportunity given by the add-on nozzle, however, improves the pump’s versatility.

The MX 15200 direct flow can be challenging to use because of its strength, and it is therefore suitable only in very specific cases, but it surely is an excellent addendum to its little MX sisters.

The pump does not come with a power supply, but only with a normal (Italian) plug.

I really like the Rossmont Mover Mx 15200 pump. With its amazing efficiency of 608 liters per watt, and its economic efficiency of 109 litres per euro, it comes out as one of the best pumps I have ever tried. Its behavior in the tank is also irreproachable. It is a silent and powerful pump, and comes with a 3 year warranty! It is a great product.

Starting with the minimal amount of space occupied in the tank, adding the low noise impact and the optimal flow rate, this is a superior product. And even though it is not electronic, it’s versatile thanks to the add-on nozzle which allows it to be used in different set-ups. The MX 15200 is really powerful and is recommended for use in wider tanks, while its little sisters are perfect for medium-sized tanks.

The only possible drawback is the RRP price of € 139,90, which is justified by the exceptional Italian manufacturing, its performance, included accessories, and its three year warranty.
