Alka Haul – a Remarkable Alkalinity Buffer by ATM

ATM Alka Haul

One of the most important measurements in a marine aquarium is its carbonate hardness; its dKh or KH. This measurement is also important for freshwater aquariums, together with GH. For both types of aquariums, ATM presents Alka Haul Reef and Alka Haul Freshwater.

The name Alka is short for Alkalinity, which is the carbonate content. Haul stands for reserve. So this is a carbonate reserve.

Alka Haul Reef

ATM  states that the chemical formula of Alka Haul is very complex. This buffer consists of several elements in order to allow a long stabilization of pH and KH, as well as calcium and magnesium, so it benefits many aspects of the tank, not just alkalinity. As is ATM‘s custom, this product is extremely  concentrated; ATM states that Alka Haul is 2.5 times more concentrated than other buffers on the market.

The package is 236 ml, and the label says that 1 gr of powder in 55 liters of water increases alkalinity by 1 Kh degree. To simplify, let’s take a couple of examples:

  • 100 liter tank: to increase 1 Kh degree we must dose 1.8 gr. of powder
  • 300 liter tank: to increase 1 Kh degree we must dose 5.5 gr. of powder

Essentially, you have to divide your tank’s volume by 55, and you obtain the grams of powder to add.

The 236 ml package costs 29 euros. (US $16.99 for 8 oz)

Alka Haul Freshwater

Alka Haul Freshwater’s formulation, of course, is different from the one for reef aquariums. But it is equally complex, and consists of several elements. This formulation, similar to the reef one, promotes alkalinity stability for a long time. It also contains calcium and magnesium, so it helps to purify the water and it supports the entire tank by promoting bacteria activity. This product is extremely concentrated too. ATM states that Alka Haul is 2.5 times more concentrated than the other buffers on the market.

Like its saltwater partner, Alka Haul Reef  comes in a 236 ml package, and the label says that 1 gr. of powder in 55 liters increases alkalinity by 1 Kh degree. For example:

  • 100 liter tank: to increase 1 Kh degree we must dose 1.8 gr. of powder
  • 300 liter tank: to increase 1 Kh degree we must dose 5.5 gr. of powder

Again, for whatever size tank you have, you must divide your tank’s size by 55, and you obtain how many grams to add.

The 236 ml package costs 28,50 euros. (US $15.99 for 8oz)
