Bio Pellets

Doc thanks for the reply, so you think I would be fine placing the pellets in my TLF Phosban reactor, w/ approx. 200ml of pellets. Sounds good, Im gonna place an order for the pellets today.

I'm still debating about this bio pellet business.

I mean I'm still a complete newbie to this hobby but it seems to me that GFO is the so far proven and most reliable option for phosphate removal.

And bio pellets seems to be like Mercedes in that they have the most advanced technology that may work for a while but could completely break down. Where as GFO seems to be like Lexus which uses more proven reliable technology...

And since I'm a newb I guess it's safer for me to use GFO.

Many people have very low nitrates n phosphates and their reefs are beautiful. Noel does not use Bio-pellets and his phos are 0.01

I would say if your n/p begin to get out of control relative to use GFO then bio-pellets

I have a small TLF reactor (150, I think it's called). Would a Rio+ 600 (200 gph) be enough flow to run the pellets?
probably not, I was running mine with a maxi jet 900 and after a few days the tumble wasnt the same so I tee'd off my main pump...

I should of asked that first, but it might be able to push for a 45g... I think you should have plan B ready just in case, (a bigger pump or something like that...)

What happens if your tumble rate slows down?

I noticed the tumbling in my reactor began to slow down 4 weeks ago. I increased the flow to maximum which only helped slightly. I didn't make any other changes after that. Over the subsequent weeks I tested for phosphates (I don't ck for nitrates because I can't see those colors on the color test strips.) All test results were steady at 0.01 ppm until 11/4 (0.09ppm). Now I had recently fed the fish which may have skewed the test. Testing today resulted 0.13ppm! Agh!!!

First I ck'd the MJ pump which was cluttered with debry. Cleaning the intake of the pump alone increased the flow. Later today I will change the pump to a strong Eheim.

I will test again on Wednesday. I'll also test for Nitrates and help some one help me with the color thing.

doc...i did that several weeks after the bio pellets introduction....the mj1200 wasn't cutting it. for my pm reactor, 400 gph pump is perfect......perhaps a 600 gph and throttle it back a little would be a better choice in case more power is needed in the future. but for now 400gph is perfect and i do have spare mag 7 laying around if i need one.

PM'd to me "Hey Doc which pellets do you use?"

I started out with NP Pellets from marine depot.com then bought NPX bio-pellets from Tito @ gotham aquatics because he happened to be @ the MeetnGreet. NPX's formula is the same.

Other vendors of the bio-pellets claim tweaks in their formula make their pellets better, but I personally haven't tried any others.

Which brand of Bio-pellets is everyone using?
