Hi Guys,

Does anyone else find this misleading?

When I first joined, I thought that a Senior Member was someone who had been reefing for a long time. It wasn't until my title suddenly changed one day that I realized it referred to how many posts I had made.

Today I was reading through some posts that were definitley made by people with VERY little experience or in some cases common sense that are titled Senior Member. I certainly am not qualified for this title, and think it may be misleading to newbies.

I love all the new updates to the site, and just wanted to know if anyone else found this confusing.

Thanks,
Leslie

this is a good point. it's something we have talked about changing.
the problem is though how do you judge some ones experience.
someone with 1 post can be an expert and some one with 1000 posts can still be a noob. we had discussed having buttons or badges, like merit badges, to give out, but that's still in the begining stages.

GrimmReefers had something like that. You progressed through the different fish levels and got little badges by your name. In the end all it did was cause problems as some people thought they should have more badges than they had or that others had.

It not a good thing and all it does it create problems between people.

Leslie, I couldn't agree more. When I first joined I assumed anyone with "senior member" had advice that was golden.

Jon, can I get the "tallest reefer" badge? unless anyone else beats 6'7".

Actually this is more about uninformed Forum Users than uninformed Reefers.

Just about every forum I frequent uses some sort of "Title". I don't see it as anything more than an ego-booster. I don't see a need for titles at all. When I join a forum or lurk, it only takes about a week to know who knows what they are talking about and those who don't.

A stcky in the beginners forum could me made to explain this.

Maybe it should just be eliminated and not replaced with anything...? It's more fun when people add their own titles :)

we threw around the idea of having reef tests for each "badge" they would not be handed out randomly, you would have to prove you knew your stuff. like getting a degree in reef chemistry, SPS husbandry, or fish disease. they were not meant to be just pieces of decoration but to let members know who was the most knowledgeable in each subject. the ideas are not on paper yet, this was a discusion we had a little while back.

Badges, we don't need no stinkin' badges.

Alfredo, $1. but suggested donation is $20 a year. You can either give though paypal or by donating to the auction at the upcoming spring frag swap. Corals you donate are raffled off and the final price is your donation to the site.

If you have donated and haven't gotten the donor button, send a PM to josh.

Depending on what you plan to ask for these badges, this might not work as there are many theories on how things should be done. I know for a fact i disagree with a lot of the accepted theories in this hobby.

A good example is PaulB's tank, he's breaking a lot of today's accepted theories and it is THE longest running tank I personally have knowledge of. And it is a beautiful tank to boot with a fish that very little of the "Experts" (not a reference to any particular person or forum) have been able to keep alive for more than a year.

I've always taken the seinor/junior titles with a grain of salt and I suggest everyone do so as well. An experienced hobbiest that you want to take advice from, should have created something from his learnings that you admire. Don't listed to a guy giving advice if his tank sucks :D

hehe! me too! I've been here for over a year and I don't post much. Just read a lot. Still totally new probably maybe once I get into my second year I might know a little something. The titles would be nice based on someone success in there tank and being able to resolve people's problems. Kind of like acknologing a hero. Just my thought!

I think we should eliminate the tile thingie if that is meant to indicate the "level of a reefer" because it cannot. Most new members would be misled into taking the advice who just voice most often. The title only tells how many posts a member has made which has been already indicated somewhere below the avatar, therefore the wordings of "senior" and "junior" seems misleading. I also oppose to rate the level of a reefer because who are the judges and we have no standards to judge-for example, is someone a better reefer who can grow SPS faster but know little about diease than one who can cure diease but not a fast grower? So I say forget about the rating thing.
