PADI certified for almost 3 years now. Advanced Diver.

Pacific Northwest diving is fantastic, but I have to keep a reef tank to appreciate the tropical species.

NAUI Certified in when I was college at U. Miami back in '80. Haven't been diving in 10 years. I often think about taking it up again, particularly when my kids are old enough.

FAUI (Federation of Australian Underwater Instructors) since 1978. I dive regularly around Sydney and catch many of my own fish.

Even caught a mantis shrimp the other week.

NAUI certified in the early 80's in Kaneohe Hawaii. Haven't done more than snorkel for many years now because my wife isn't certified and I really need a refresher.

I can't believe no one jumped on Tom44's comments about doing it 4 times a night on his honeymoon.

My wife and I just got PADI certified on our honeymoon in St. Lucia last month! Talk about a fantastic "add-on" hobby to reef keeping

Maybe it is because he said he did it 4 times a day and only once at night.

What else are honeymoons for?

I've been PADI certified for 7 years. I've been to the Bahamas, Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Curaco, Belize and Bonaire. Diving is up there with eating and breathing on my list of life's pleasures. Next trip: Little Cayman.

PADI certified in '77 been a divemaster since '82. Dove Hawaii, Cayman, Cozemel, Cay Sal Bank, Malta(in the Med.), Red Sea, all over the Bahamas and the Keys. Dive every weekend the weather permits off the S.E. Coast of Florida. Having your own boat makes all the difference. Over 15,000 logged dives.

You might say I'm addicted, my wife will swear to it! I have met the greatest people I know while diving.

PADI '85. Though I got my cert. up here in cold New England, my preference is warm water diving. It seemed that everytime I went diving up north, I could't wait for my air to run out

Too cold. I guess I'm just a wuss when it comes to cold water. I grew up in Fla. and just cannot get used to the "balmy" 68' water.

The only tropical location I've been to has been Cozumel. But I've been there 6 times. It's cheap

OK...help me out here.
My wife & I want to get into SCUBA, but have no idea where to begin. What's the difference between NAUI and PADI, and which should we go for.
What kind of price range are wee looking at to get certified?

Scott Pray,

Do you always dive with a buddy, or do you solo? How do you find a dive buddy every weekend?

Initial certification with NASDS in 1988, AOW with PADI...Got my wife hooked in 1997 !

So far we've been to Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Mexico, Fiji...plan on the Great Barrier Reef next year...

There are no words to describe the diving experience to a non-diver. Get certified! You'll appreciate the Reef aquarium even more!

Jase, PADI (Professional Association of Dive Instructors) is a for profit organization of instruction/certification that's openwater course, from what I hear, requires no rescue technique training, just basic equipment, buoyancy, and underwater management skills. I've read the PADI openwater book, and its very basic. NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors) is a non-for-profit organization whose initial openwater certification course requires a substantial swim test, breathold test, and water tread test. They teach everything PADI does along with navigation, basic rescue technique, etc. at about the same price. I'd go with NAUI anyday.
