If I recall correctly, his first post on here was him bragging about how he had just changed from a 20 to a 30, that was less than 2 weeks ago. He has been told over and over to slow down, he won't listen. I feel sorry for the lives that have been put in his hands. KIRTIS, IT WILL TAKE 4 TO 6 WEEKS FOR A TANK TO CYCLE! ALL THAT MOVING AROUND ONLY CAUSES MORE STRESS. I can see the LFS saw you coming a mile away. Just keep listening to them, you will certainly help make them rich, and deplete the supplies of livestock!

on October 28th you made your first post about getting the 30 gallon tank. Since that time you have added a chocolate chip star and a flame scallop. And moved everything again into a 55. You do not have a protein skimmer, you were just asking about that a few days ago. You were also still asking about what other kind of filters to use. Unless you have an unlimited supply of cash, (which at 17, I doubt it) you still do not have any proper filteration. My guess is you ignored the suggestions about a Deep sand bed as well. SO, WHEN everything in your tank dies, and you get fed up with spending money on stuff that dies, We all will know where to go to get a cheap tank!

31-2c maybe you should lay off a little bit and give kirtis a break. There are plenty intelegent 17 year olds out there in the reef hobby. Im 18 and when i go into LFS's when people are waiting for assistence often times i answer their questions intead of the employees. YOungyens can have just as much knowledge as you or anyone else. Sometimes those with less financial funding become better reefers because they have to improvise more and not just follow the directions. Me i have had to make my own stand for 90 gallon, refugium, and protien skimmer(this sucks getting new one soon, it was fun building though) and am right now working on a temp controler that will turn fans on and off at certain temps. How many things have you made( im sure you have had your fill of makings not ment as a challenge). So i think you need to step off your soap box and give this kid a break because im sure you have made dumb mistakes also because your pride has gotten in the way of common sense. MAybe he has some learning but dont make it seem like you will not suceed.

Kirtis about fish i would chill with those for awhile and maybe you can add a few more inches worth of fish. But if you actually dont have protien skimmer keep up on water changes and dont overfeed till you get one. Good luck buddy.

This post reminds me of my parents tellin me bout sex and drugs...eventually i learned my lesson {although im only 20}...but common now, u all swear u havent killed a fish or two or 20 in the beggining esp when your just gettin into the hobby. So i think kurtis will be fine just as long as he keeps his parameters up and maybe add some LR to the tank if there aint any in there already...Good luckk.

I'm 17, thats no excuse for ignorance. Get an LFS job, take their info w/ a grain of salt and go online and figure things out for yourself thru books and fellow reefkeepers experience. Don't attack advice because you don't like it. And i repeat, get a fish related job, or get any job, believe me, you'll need the money!

Tangirl put it very good "you don't like the advice you get so you get snotty", couldn't have said it better myself.

Kirtis--

I think you'll be fine. The clown and the eel are both fairly tough fish. The flame scallop really shouldn't be kept in my opinion and would be doomed in any set up. Keep a close eye on your ammonia, and nitrite levels and if you see anything suspicious do a water change. I wouldn't add anything to ths tank for at least a month. Your wallet will be much better off. Any time you are tempted to buy something for your tank get a good book are some equipment instead. This is really not the sort of thing you want to start upside down and backwards.

Glenn

P.S. Please stick around the board. You pretty much started this post off completely wrong by asking one of the most unpopular questions. You'll learn your way around soon enough and will be giving advice to others soon. Other questions to avoid for the time being:

What is the smallest tank I can keep X in?
What is the minumun light for X?
What is the bare minimun for X?

It's okay, nin0 - you'll get back around to it. Just stay away from the illegal drugs.

Thanks Monkey - sometimes we all need some things pointed out to us somewhat bluntly. She-Goat knows I do from time to time.

It takes along time to learn all about this hobby. I set up my first "reef" tank in 97' and still have so much I can learn.

The best advise about this board, if one member gives you advise look for a second person. If a few people give you the same advise take it. Age means nothing, post count means nothing, ect. You must expect to hear advise you dont like some times but youll be learning.

My best advise for you is to pick up a few good books and start reading, then read more and more.

If you dont have a skimmer, or enough money, post in the marketplace and get a HOT entry level skimmer. A turbo flotor multi HOT skimmer would work for you, IMO. This will help yo handle the amount of food youll need to feed to the ell. BTW I used to have a snowflake in my fish only days, and have to say they are amazing animals. Take good care of it. Keep testing Nitrite and ammonia and move the fish to your LFS as soon as some appears. HTH

Im 34 and if I only knew half of what I thought I knew at 17 I would bring about world peace, save all the starving children, invent a rocket that travels faster than light, create a perpetual motion machine and know the definition of irony

I tried very hard not to post anymore comments. But just one thing.....Can we all afford doing stupid habits yet be able to support our expenses and still leaves significant spare $$ to support out 500000000000 gallon reefs? (yep, that was your own words, isn't it)

There is a thing called learning curve. Trust me, you are just at the beginning of the learning curve. Take all those comments and take them in a positive way. We ain't got nothing to gain by be little you. It is only when someone repeatedly asking same questions & refuse to admit their problems that annoys everyone on board. What you are and WILL go thru, everyone on this board has been there, done it.

You probably wanna to either go through archived articles on this board, or hey, go to another board. Try ReefCentral, maybe you will find the answer you want to hear, there!!!

Oh, I forgot to add some of these:

I can't believe anyone could actually believe that his tank would be fine. HE has moved them twice in 7 days. Going from a 20, to a 55 would require more substrate. All some of you are doing is setting him up for a bigger fall. IF you check his other posts, he is still looking to add more! Someone should have serious words with his LFS. I guess as long as they have someone gullible enough to think they can just add anything in any short amount of time, then they will still in business.

I hope not, feeders are not good to feed your eel with. Can you say fatty liver disease?

BTW, we already have an archive called the garf files, why not "The Kirtis Files" also?

OK well seeing that I started in saltwater aquariums at the age of 13 I felt I had to post on this topic. First of all I did not know a whole heck of a lot until I was about 17. The reason for that was I started to work at a fish store. I did more research than I ever did before when I got that job. The internet, local club, some books and this great board were the places that I learned most of my knowledge. I am 19 now and when I think back a few years I can see I was a really uneducated about saltwater. I have changed jobs to a better store and I am always learning new things. NOBODY KNOWS EVERYTHING ABOUT SALTWATER. My X-employer did not beleive that because he knew it all. I might help customers all day long answering questions but then I find myself asking questions to other people in the hobby all the time. Experience can help but there is always something new to lean.
