most advice, if not immediately able to be judged good or bad,is usually fairly discernable as to its level of sincerity, or lack thereof.

knowledge level of a poster is usually fairly apparent after a few posts.

(sometimes a knowledgeable person can also learn from a 'noob')

There's a lot to say for real names and consistency. For example, as soon as I saw Mitch Gibbs post here, I knew that he is the Mitch Gibbs that visited my home; that I've met at MACNA on a few occasions; that owns a store; that markets the Aquatic Revolution system, etc.

These things are only because you had a previous relationship with him.

I suspect that many newcomers would know Mitch as well.

But only newcomers that knew Mitch before as well. If I had no relationship with him, it would make no difference what name he went by.

In addition, because I used my real name, Mitch and many others here immediately knew me!

But only because they already knew you!

If I had only seen the "dizzy' handle, Mitch's post would have meant very little to me.

This seems weird. Its like you are saying the only posts that mean anything to you are posts by people you recognize. How are you not saying that?

If I had posted as "Mr. Reef" no one would have recognized me. Real names DO matter. They can provide a lot of information about a person.

But only if you already know them, or know of them.

I understand why you are saying about consistency, but wanting a naming convention across different boards is like wanting everyone to agree on how big a tank a tang should have.

You have to admit there are some merits to it, and some drawbacks too.

:idea: How about everyone just starts using their drivers license for their avator. It will keep the discussions serious and eliminate the silly little characters that some find so offensive. :wink: If it keeps those in witness protection from being able to participate, it will be a small price to pay.
