It will be suspect the next time the formula changes. The problem is that the older samples they had are (or were since they're being replaced) suspect right now, thus being pretty pointless.

No point in being wrong right from the start as far as actually published results go. But nothing you can do about future changes.

Did the study start in the first place to find out why urchin larvae had higher mortality rates in some of the salts that Dr. Shimek used in his experiment? I can't remember now but I thought this was how it all started. If so, then that might be a reason to test the older salts. I remember there was a lot of criticism over some of the theories for the high mortality from a certain salt.

Tom has informed me the salt samples (with the current formations) will be sent to the lab today. Tom spent his weekend finishing up all the prelimanary prep work after having acquired the lab materials needed.

The samples are still at the labs being processed. Matt (and everyone else ) is awaiting the test results.

that was a fantastic study. what is this test going to offer that tims did not?

I will caution acceptance of the above study. An N of 1 is not scientific, no matter how good the methodology used. There are a number of issues in the published study, but at the same time, it is no worse than studies conducted by others.

Lets give it some time and see what these guys can do.

Wade, IIRC, all the aquarium salt studies that I've seen where done with only one sample. IMO the one linked above is as good as the others, if not better.

Been 5 weeks since the samples were supposed to be sent to the lab. I had the impression that this was a short turnaround process for the lab.

The samples are still at the lab. They are doing their best to finish testing all the samples, but because of the discounted price for the test procedures, the salt samples do not get top priority. I will try to keep everyone informed of the testing status and see if I can expedite the process in any way.
