Bob, you have never used RODI water, so how can you scientifically compare your tapwater to it and say that it is of no use in a reef tank?

Tapwater isn't water. It is water-plus-X-amount-of-X-unknowns. RODI water IS water and only water. Why use anything else? To save 200 bucks? On a reef tank? LOL, good one. :)

I'm going to close this thread tonight at midnight EST (If I remember, that is ;)) Get your valid points in before then. I think this thread is past the point of utility, not to mention it encompasses a bewildering array of topics. Feel free to start new threads with specific topics for discussion.

Agreed. That is why my plant life full tank's inhabitents have lived for years and years.

First you say a year, then you say a couple months, now you say years and years. Which is it?

both

I cant get over the continued misrepresentations. You have had a reef tank for a year, lightly stocked to this day, and stocked with very little that needs lots of Ca. Your fish only tanks, and the survival of those fish is of little or no import to this discussion because, as has been pointed out several times, fish can take much more 'abuse' than a reef.

This is getting silly.

Jim

what I really really silly is to think newbies have to must be exposed to more and more mechanical filtration and more and more techniques with new skills to learn at each turn. As you stated doin't use tap and use less plant life. After all phosphates come from things other than the input water. And plant life does consume the phosphates. So all I do is just use the plant life. What to me is really really silly is to tell the newbie they have to use filtered water and have the plant life. and the worse possible thing is to tell the newbie to just use filtered water and they will never have phosphates, nitrates, toxins or any other problems.then they wonder why they get those things anyway.

Can you show me what page it was or in what thread someone here stated this?

I'd say that there are a few things a person must learn in order for them to keep a successful reef tank.

What could be more simple than removing all possible contaminants from your water before dumping it into your tank? Start clean.

P.S. I use macros, and though I don't skim, I don't have many SPS yet.

The truth is that dispite what Guy says, environmental engineers harvest macro algaes from the ocean to check to see if copper polution is present in the ocean. So obviously, macro algaes to absorb copper even if everythign else does.

I never ever said that Macro Algae doesn't sequester Copper. You started that it would take 3 weeks for Macro Algae to remove copper. If that's true then that's far too long. Especially if you add more every day by topping off with tap water loaded with the stuff.

You say it's fine to add tap water to a reef tank as long as there is macro algae present, even if it's loaded with copper.

any water fit for human consumption will work in any aquarium.

That is the statement I am disputing.

Both = 2. I gave 3 options. You can't have both. :sigh:

Planted refugeums are a fine addition to a marine system, many of us including myself use them. We understand they are a tool, useful but not necessary. Your arguments supporting their use however are flawed, ignorant, sometimes just plain deceiving. Furthermore your empirical data so far on these matters can fit in a thimble. One reaches a certain point after a time in this hobby where he or she is qualified to answer questions, give advice, and speak with a certain level of authority. This person has hard earned knowledge gained over years of experience. This thread is filled with them. Righty for instance has been very patient with you. Then there are those that lack experience, AND multi dimensional knowledge of how these things work, AND useful empirical data and need to be asking questions, NOT answering them. You are VERY confused as to which group you belong in.
Most of us learned very fast that tap water causes problems in a system very quickly. I look at your tank, and it LOOKS like you've been adding tap water. It's a mess. Get rid of the tap water and the associated phoshates, and you don't need as many plants - has that even occured to you? :?
This is getting silly.

Jim

Very, very well stated, Jim. Bravo.
