You really thinnk cooking will restore this rock? What is the best way without stinking up my condo? Will the rock be full LR again or will it become base rock?

Rob, cooking the rock doesn't make it "dead" rock It's more like letting it rest in the dark, under heavy skimming to use up any nutrients that are contained in the rock, blow off/out any debris, kills off any unwanted algea (including coraline) but it won't kill benifical bacteria. It souldn't smell any worse than your present tank does now.

This is a list of what was tested in my last health dept. well water test..............
pH, Alk (CaCO3)[hydroxide, Carbonate, Bicarbonate], Flouride, Chloride, Sulfate, Nitrate, Hardness (CaCO3)[Caronate, Noncarbonate] Calcium, Magnesium, Iron, Maganese, Total Solids [Suspended, Dissolved], Color, Turdibity then there is a "other".

Hope this is helpful.

I guess if you looked on the bright side.....you could alwasy start breeding sea hares. I don't think they'd starve
I really do hate that your having so much trouble.

Thanks Len! I wasn't sure if that was accurate anymore.

Rob - if it were me, I would put some of the current rock in the sump as seed rock and replace the rock in the tank with several larger pieces of rock.

Sorry again!

new LR in the main tank is still $$$$. I dont have that right now. Wife got laid off today.

Still would probably need 50 lbs or so? Cured LR at the LFS is $10 per lb.

If you were near me, I would give you a bunch of rock I'm not using. Are you a member of a local reef club?

Not all this again. Replace the live rock when you can afford it. I think you've done everything else.

I have a remora HOB skimmer that is collecting dust. If you want to cook the rock and borrow the skimmer on extended loan, let me know.

:D

Could you cook half of the rock now, then after the first half is done, cook the second half? No need to buy new rock.

You can do all that or simply do what minime did in this thread:

http://www.reefs.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.p ... highlight=

Or take the word of gatorracer and the swf newbie in this thread:

http://www.reefs.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.p ... highlight=

Or continue to follow the advice currently to cook you rocks. and wind up continue tearing down this tank every 6 months to a year attempting to maintain a sterile system. Just as this link warns:

http://www.dummies.com/WileyCDA/Dummies ... -2065.html

The choice is yours. You now have years of experience of following the type of adivce given here.

PLB,

If there are no nutrients in the water column, how is adding macros going to help?

Beaslbob - I did agree with you on my experience from using a refegium but I would appreciate it if you don't use me as leverage. I don't agree with all off your assesments on killing of plant life with plant life.

Rob, I have an buddy in Sioux Falls that has a tank maintenance business and also works as the man at a LFS as far as taking care of tanks and corals. I brought up your problem last time I saw him and he had a couple of suggestions. Again I dont claim to be an expert and neither does he. He had a customer that started using him because of a simmiliar problems with nuesance algae. He brought about a dozen mexican turbos that were just huge and put them in the tank for two weeks. The destroyed all of the algae in no time. Now that wasn't the fix but it did get him a little closer to square one. He then made kind of a DIY filter out of 1" pvc. He put charcoal in a bag 1st then phosban 2nd and lastly used charchoal again. He kept that going and changed all three bags about every other week. I finally took about two months but the algae problem got the point where it was nothing but normal monthly maintanance.

Like I said this is just a suggestion. In fact he brought all the turbos but 3 back and the LFS to them back with a minimal charge for restocking or some BS.

Good luck
