i have had 2 koralia 4's running in my tank for around 8 months give or take. 1 is still running, 1 quit on me. i sent it back for replacement. i did have them on a wavemaker though....they say you cannot do this, even though it's not in the literature that came with the koralia.

You know, I hear more and more people complain about this. And to me for some reason, everyone thinks I'm the manufacturer. I get more emails to replace pumps purchased elsewhere or to reimburse people because they say that these pumps killed their corals than I sell. But that's neither here nor there.

Why do you expect them to put everything you can't do with the pump in their manual? Do rio pumps tell you not to use them on a wavemaker? Supreme pumps? Eheim? Quiet one? At what point do you take responsibility and figure if nothing is mentioned perhaps you better ask before you do it? They don't mention anything about not running them without the empeller right? Nor do they say anything about not sticking your tongue into the pump while it's running.

Everyone keeps whining after they destroyed their pump that the company didn't specifically say not to use it on a wavemaker. WAH. You should have looked into it first! If the manuf. is supposed to tell you everything you can't do with the pump where does it end?

True but you need to understand your customer if you want to be in business for long. This is a powerhead, and the first question most people ask is "Can I run this on a wavemaker?". They should use common sense and maybe spend 5 seconds researching their customer.

Well the others I have quoted have been in business a long time and I don't recall seeing that information in anything they include in the boxes. Not to mention this product is a huge home run so I can't see something so trivial being the stone that takes down the giant. So I don't really think that comes into play much.

I have a couple of #4s running in my 180 for the last couple of months. No problems so far.

As for the wavemaker thing - personally I don't use them anymore. IMO if you have enough flow you're going to have plenty of chaotic water movement and switching the pumps on/off creates unnecessary wear and increases the chances of a mishap with small fish/snails getting into the pump while it's off.

i wasn't whining, or complaining, i was sharing information. i'm happy with the 2 year warranty on koralia pumps, that's clearly stated on the box. maybe they shouldn't have mentioned that either, or do companies make it a practice to just mention the positives, and not the limitations? either way, i don't have a need for powerheads in my new tank, as far as i can see so far, so i'll be selling the new replacement.

X,

Just wondering what you were planning on selling the replacements for ($$$-wise)? I am looking into getting some for my new 120gal. set-up, so keep me in mind when you receive them.

Thanks

I wasn't singling any one person out when I said everyone is whining.

Not being able to run on a wavemaker is not a negative. It would be if the powerhead was designed to work with a wavemaker and it didn't. I also don't feel it's the manufacturers responsibility to list every single thing NOT to do with their product. A little common sense goes a long way.

If you don't know...ask!

It's funny that the topic of these pumps just came up again. I've got 4 of them running on 3 seperate tanks. I actually got shocked twice by two different ones on 2 different tanks last week. They were both the smaller models, I think model 2. I bought them right around the time of the recall, but I think the recall had already been announced, so I thought mine were the new ones. One of them had stopped running and I thought the impeller was stuck. I reached in the tank to give it a quick flick and BAM! Fortunately, it was just enough to get my attention. The second one on another tank was still running when I stuck my hand in that tank and it also shocked me. Again, it was just a light jolt. I'll definitely be running grounding probes to any tanks that use these (I know I should have been doing that already anyway.)

Kind of off subject, does anyone make any kind of stray voltage alarm for a tank? That would be a nice thing to have.

i was shocked by the "after recall" koralia 4 as well. i don't think the wavemaker caused that. i'm afraid my common sense failed me that time. i should have known...any man made electrical device submerged in water can shock you.
from now on i wear very thick non conductive gloves when handling powerheads.......well..... koralias anyway :?

It's pretty shocking to me to know that people are getting shocked by these things and more hasn't been done to get the word out about it. I ran a search could barely find anything about the recall. I guess I'm part of the problem. I still haven't had time to call about it. I need to do that tomorrow. I'll keep everyone posted on what they say.

This also brings up the importance of safety around aquaria. Perhaps more importantly, is the fact that GFCI's need to be added to the list of essential reefing items (along with a good skimmer, lights, RO, etc.). You just gotta have 'em!

indeed :)

i've been shocked enough over the years by just about every single type of electrical device used in an aquarium-common sense demands unplugging EVERYTHING when working with one's hands in an aquarium, regardless of whether or not a gfci is present (they can fail too ;) )

i have been looking into getting one of these hydor pumps to try it out. so far, everyone is back ordered.
my return from sump is 700 gph, and my largest powerhead is 400gph, and it is just that-LARGE. i need a suitable replacement, and frankly, more current. as always, i am trying not to spend a pile of money. :?

If you need more current then get a TUNZE. I have had one before and they are simply awesome. One of the mods doesn't require a controler either to adjust the velocity.

Life has been crazy this year and the tank project has definitely taken a backseat. I'll add some pics to the build thread as soon as I get the doors on. :)
