death match.

Yep, Jeremy, I'm guilty of just trying to have a little, light-hearted fun.
No need to make this violent, and the idea of Steve and Paul pummeling each other is far less appealing than a running soaking match through the hallways and exhibits of MACNA. Imagine shades of Trinity's "Dodge this!", but with Steve going... "Certify this!" {sounds of squirting water}

{grin}

Announcement: Saturday morning contest

We have agreed to let Steve and Paul each have one super-soaker and one gallon of salt water to have at each other.

{If only it were true, I'd pay good money to see this...}
Regards.
Mike Kirda

Your "good money" would have to include a plane ticket. Paul is not planning on coming to MACNA. It will be David Vosseler.

Oh, John... You spoil all the fun!

Ok, Saturday morning's event is cancelled... And Steve had already sent Gresham out for the largest supersoaker he could find...

I asked the amda bod if we could share our room and there was no opposition. I think our meeting is going to be Friday at 7, but it will probably be available most of the rest of the time for important events. Just let us know when you need it.

I found a fire truck at the airport, that'll do. Now I just need John to pinch the driver.

Dizzy,

Since the Poolside Cocktail Party starts at 7:30 PM on Friday, this must mean your meeting is at 7:00 AM??? Ouch. :)

You must run with a pretty tough crowd Nancy :D, I had no idea.

It is good that so many of you are planning to attend a meeting of industry people.
It is an opportunity for Steve, Peter and others to advise you of the committment necessary by industry both stateside and in the Philippines and Indonesia to immediately stop cyanide fishing and replacing it with training and materials, and a CDT to enforce the committment. Industry must fund reform itself.

Only with a committment and a timeline for its implemenation acceptable to REEForm and others will the planned embargo against fish, coral rock and invertibrates from the Philippines and Indonesia be postponed.

The meetings also provides and opportunity for all reformers to enlist the support of all reefers including the leaders in our hobby, to fight for the end of cyanide destruction of the reefs and its inhabitants.

Mike I know that industry would like to push a red button and REEForm would go away.
But all industry reads the posts. I know because I have heard from some of them and that is what I have been told.
Further, I have been contacted by several industry types outside of the Phillippines and Indonesia who fully support REEForm and they have indicated a growing interest in their fish. This tells me that the message is getting out.
Unfortuneately, industry from the Philippines and Indonesia, all of whom have been contacted by REEForm, and their stateside buyers, have been silent.
This IMO confirms their refusal to deal with the cyanide issue and thus it is necessary to take steps to prohibit the import of fish, coral, rock and invertibrates from those countries. REEForm wll be meeting with representatives of those governments soon so they are aware of the pending closure of the industry there and take steps to avoid this happening.

Morning reformers...all 8 of you,
The general forums "pinching your puffer" piece amassed nearly 5,000 views in the past 12 days...more than every thread combined [25] on the 'industry behind the hobby' in the same time period. [ including the Frank Lallo chronicles]
I think the audience prefers the funny papers to the news...

By definition...a hobby is having fun with something. Although the reform of the industry talk is a hobby to some [ occupation to 3 or 4...and an obsession to a few more ] it is apparently not very fun, interesting or sexy to most.
I used to sell more livestock in my wharehouse when I had lady employees bagging fish...just an idea.

And you'd probably have even more if you had top-less ones. :)

After reading the first bit of the puffer pinching thread, then seeing it explode, I just had to say... It's all John's fault. :D

This forum will never be all that popular. Too much thinking to do.

In the end, it will end up being a small, dedicated group that will make true reform happen, as opposed to Reeform.

Regards.

I see that my name was mentioned as being a participant at the MACNA meeting concerning "reform". At the same time, it is apparent that NGOs are "not welcome" to participate in industry-sponsored reform. Hence, I don't feel welcome to participate in a meeting to be held in the room allocated to AMDA during the conference.

Having tried in the past to organize reform activities through the Trade Advisory Group (TAG) at MACNA meetings, I learned that it was difficult to accomplish anything while other groups competed for space and time at the meeting.

If you organized a fight (mud wrestling?) between protagonists (like myself versus John Brandt, or John Brandt versus Steve Robinson) you could sell tickets to spectators to fund net-training. Or, a hobbyist could auction off his MiniReef System to raise funds to purchase barrier netting. A gimmick to entertain MACNA attendees has more chance of raising funds than reformists argueing in a meeting room.

****NEW FLASH****

PI doesn't export live rock or corals, ReeForm has done its job. Hey ReeForm can be like others, claiming others success as their own, even though the event happened before their time.

Why?

Because you know real embargoes mean starving children? Because a real embargo on Philippine and Indonesian fish would mean the children of net-fishermen and cyanide-fishermen would go hungry?

Is that why you would want to hide Wayne Ryan's threats from outer space? Not because they are real threats, but because they look like feces smeared inside a public bathroom stall?

You are probably right Mike and that is too bad.

Industry will be responsible for its own destruction.
With the major segment of their market gone, fishers and their families and exporters and their workers will be in tough economic shape. They will have industry to blame.

Stateside, wholesalers and importers will either be bankrupt and out of business or have facilities with far less product and far less profit. Industry will be to blame.

The public outcry against cyanide and their backers may attract groups who not only want cyanide stopped but want the hobby stopped. Industry will be to blame.
