Five hundred Clarions landing at once? Sounds like one of Steves' wet dreams......Can the market bare that many ? I think a lot of dealers are going to be spending extended quality time with these fish .......{ie stuck with them }What says the masses ?

I'm curious myself. I heard the same thing...but the arrival date keeps getting delayed. It would make sense as the fisheries moratorium is about coming to and end I think.

There is a schedule posted for smuggling clarions in large quantities?

Are you certain they're not tank-raised?

;)

Peace,

Steve,

There seems to be some talk about the moratorium being ended...it would help explain the arrival (they are here now) and why everyone was so loose talking about it.

Guy,
The fish...I mean half the fish got thru and not by the grace of any legal documentation.
There is no permit for the species. There is no ending moratorium.
They were listed as another. Half died before reaching the states. 1/3 or the rest are damaged w/ eye cloud and skin abrasions.
There are fireworks in progress over this thing right now.

Huh, he appears to be correct? There is no person on this planet who has more experience with collecting in Baja then Steve. After around 30 years working in Baja, he only "appears" to be correct?

The internet has still another use;
To brag about and pre-market things best left unsaid.
Kalk...ever think that it was you who initially tipped off USFWS?
To me, its a Mexican issue. The soldiers on the island were paid serious cash. I don't know if this will reach back to Mexico but if it does it will hurt the legal exporters as the new born eco-biologists in fisheries will use it as proof that the aquarium trade is a bad thing...and make money off it somehow.
They may now charge us more to inspect us as we pack...not to mention the transport and hotel costs to come do it.
Steve
PS. Environmentaly speaking, its a non issue.
The fish fills its niche abundantly and the overflow gets eaten every day in its range.

Steve it may be a non-issue environmentally speaking. The fact is people in this industry were knowlingly breaking the law. We can't excuse that. We now have another huge black eye and I'm shocked you would try and shift the blame to kalk for helping to expose this. We don't break the law in our shop and I have little sympathy for others who do. I just hope this doesn't put our industry under the microscope and cause the flow of live freight to be slowed to the point of increasing fish loss. I recently heard about another LA importer who was caught bringing in double the amount of corals in the boxes, than reported to CITES. If our goal is to reform this industry I'd have to say this is part f the job.

Well I agree,
But in terms of priority, I revert to Jesus...
"...the speck in my eye whilst having a beam in thy own.." or something like that.
I reserve my passion quota for the institutional killers of reef...ie. a cyanide consortium that provides poison to catch half our fish supply in Indo and the Philippines making nearly everyone accomplices...witting or unwitting.
Then the next outrage is the going along with it like a remora by the non-aquarium, city based NGOs...Arguably they are just as guilty for the crime like a cop that looks the other way and provides cover for the deed.
Next to this 24 year indictment against the cyanide trade...and its cohorts, I have less energy for the other stuff.
I rank order it like this;.

undocumented Clarions..... 1
cyanide trade .................100.
Besides...plenty in the Mexcian government knew and accepted money for this. They covered for it and still will.

Every thing I say on this board is done so knowing it will have a great affect on those reading it. This was not an example of how easy it is to get around the system ......This is an example of how it is impossible to get around the system . Maybe one fish two fish .........but so what. It is almost impossibe to pull off any large scale black market stunts. ...........The system works

So why didn't you call fish and wildlife directly?

Or did you?

No I did not .....but I am sure that many jealous importers without access to these fish did.........as to why I did not .......I thought that there was a change in Mexican collection rules .....and that the fish were legal. I started the Topic with the question of is it wise to import that many at once? How will the market react? Its the industry checks and ballances which flushed out the other issue ......

Vengeful and jealous tattle-tailing are checks and balances?
Interesting way to put it.
As contentious as the LA crowd was before this...they'll be even more like the Manila cartel after this.
The only thing that brings the Manila crowd together after fighting, threatening, stealing each others suppliers and and viciously competing are the common threat of sanctions brought about by the cyanide issues.
LA and other importers had a big meeting once over the shut-down threat imagined from the USCRTF and all had to tolerate each other and check their guns at the door.
Until the next common cause occurs, I think it is useful to note how the nature of this business culture keeps them from uniting for the 'greater good issues.'
